With so many unanswered questions still circulating ahead of Yellowstone season four – none least the fate of John Dutton (played by Kevin Costner) and his son Kayce (Luke Grimes) and daughter Beth (Kelly Reilly) – the Paramount trailer has given fans a taste of what’s to come. While the three Dutton may take a backseat, the action still comes thick and fast in the teaser – especially between Rip (Cole Hauser) and loyal rancher Lloyd (Forrie J Smith).
The season four trailer did its best not to give away too many of the most talked-about plot points ahead of the November 7 premiere.
However, Yellowstone sleuths still managed to spot the Dutton Ranch’s enforcer Rip landing a punch on his – supposedly – trusty righthand man Lloyd.
In a split-second shot, Rip can be seen punching Lloyd in the face before the promo moves on to show the Dutton ranch seemingly under attack.
As the promo continues, fans see Jamie Dutton (Wes Bentley) in some sort of moral dilemma with his biological father Garrett Randall (Will Patton), as well as Rip continuing to beat and thump his way through new enemies.
The reasons as to why Rip seemingly punches Lloyd in the face remain unknown, especially seeing as Lloyd is seen elsewhere in the trailer trying to ensure the ranch’s safety.
He encourages Monica (Kelsey Asbille) and Tate Dutton (Brecken Merrill) to find safety as he appears to get to work fighting off whatever insurgents have arrived.
So why would Rip have decided to attack Lloyd? Well, a new theory hints it may have something to do with Lloyd’s previous relationship with local cowboy Wade Morrow (Boots Sutherland).
It’s become a pretty popular idea among the Yellowstone fandom that the two veteran ranchers would’ve crossed paths at some point – especially as both Lloyd and Wade were branded.
On Reddit, Kokopatti2320 put forward the theory: “Is it possible Lloyd and Wade worked at the Yellowstone at the same time and maybe even got branded at the same time?”
AnnaNonna replied: “Yes it is possible. Lloyd obviously knew who Wade Morrow was.”
Acacia Wildwood agreed: “Lloyd knew who they were talking about in the Bunkhouse that night. Ryan (Ian Bohen) (I think) was recapping the incident and trying to remember his name when Lloyd called it out for them, so yeah I suspect he’s had some interactions with him in the past.”
While gu_doc echoed: “I think it’s almost guaranteed that they worked together at the Yellowstone in the past. Lloyd isn’t new. He knows the history of his generation there.”

Lloyd was present when Rip and a group of ranchers hunted Wade down for his attacks on the Dutton land and alliance with Market Equities.
Rip led the charge with the likes of Teeter (Jen Landon), Walker (Ryan Bingham), Colby (Denim Richards) and co as they hung Wade in the woods.
However, in particularly graphic scenes, Rip ordered Walker to carve the Yellowstone brand out of Wade’s flesh to prove his loyalty.
Lloyd watched on from afar without getting his hands dirty in the hanging or the carving of the brand.
So could it be that now the dust has settled somewhat on Wade’s demise, Lloyd took issue with Rip’s particularly brutal and callous execution of – who is now believed to be – an old ally?
If Lloyd and Wade did have history as many believe, it’s not unlikely the experienced rancher would not have wanted to see him killed in such an undignified way.
In season four, a new theory could be that perhaps Lloyd confronts Rip for the way he treated Wade – with it striking a chord due to their long history.
Not taking kindly to being questioned by Lloyd, the pair could become embroiled in a fistfight, thus the punch fans have uncovered in the season four trailer.
Yellowstone season 4 premieres on Sunday, November 7 on Paramount Network in the USA. A UK release date is yet to be announced.
