Yellowstone airs on Paramount Network and season four of the Western melodrama is in the making. The series is set at the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch and it stars Kevin Costner as owner John Dutton. Cole Hauser plays ranch hand Rip Wheeler, and some fans believe his name has a worrying hidden meaning.
Does Rip’s name have a hidden meaning?
Yellowstone has gained plenty of new fans with each season and the third instalment was one of the most intense yet.
The finale saw anonymous killers target the Dutton family, including John and his daughter Beth (played by Kelly Reilly).
Rip was one of the only characters who was unharmed in the final episode, but that does not mean he has escaped lightly.
Some fans are worried Beth may have died when an explosive device was sent to her office.
They have suggested Rip’s name is a bad omen and his character has been foreshadowing what is yet to come.
Yellowstone fanatics took to Reddit to discuss the idea that Rip’s name is actually an acronym for Rest In Peace.
One fan said: “It could be a coincidence, a reference to his mother, or maybe foreshadowing in reference to the finale at the end of season three?”
Rip’s name has not been explained explicitly in the series, so it has been open to interpretation.
Another fan suggested the nickname came from his high school days when he and his friends would target freshmen students.
They said: “Rumour has it when he was a senior in high school, him and his buddies would ride around looking for freshmen and would catch them and paddle their little a**** off. He’d say RIP before doing it.”
While some have suggested the theory is far fetched, there are others who have seen how death is a familiar concept to Rip.
One said: “I doubt it’s tied to one episode but you could be onto something. Death does seem to follow him, maybe it’s tied to that.”
Viewers are hoping the origins of his name will be explained in a future flashback.
Another said: “I assumed it was just an uncommon or old fashioned name.”
One fan pointed out how Rip is in fact a real name and it of Dutch origin, meaning “ripe, full and grown”.

Rip could be the character’s full name, but some are still convinced it signifies death.
One Reddit user said: “You know they are gonna kill off his character, we love him too much! He may be my favourite character of all time!!”
There are other theories to suggest Rip will go on a rampage following the “death” of his lover Beth.
His character is known for showing no remorse when it comes to violence and he is yet to have his time in the spotlight.
Viewers have suggested he will go on a killing spree to avenge his wife-to-be.
The ranch hand had a tough start in life as his parents divorced when he was young.
His father ended up killing his former wife and his children, with only Rip surviving.
John Dutton wanted to give Rip a second chance in life and took him on as a ranch hand.
In return, Rip has always been loyal to John and is one of his most trustworthy friends.
If John or Beth’s lives are in the balance, Rip will most definitely take action no matter the consequences.
