Upgrade Sequel TV Series Is On The Way From Blumhouse

Upgrade was a violent sci-fi thriller directed by Leigh Whannell, who also co-created the Saw series and made this year’s hugely successful The Invisible Man. The 2018 movie wasn’t a big box office hit, and Whannell himself previously stated that he thought the chances of a sequel were low. But there’s good news for Upgrade fans–a spin-off TV series is on the way.

The Upgrade show will be directed by Whannell, and will be set several years after the events of the movie. It will once more focus on the AI augmentation known as STEM–only this time it has evolved, and is being used by the government to fight crime.

As well as directing, Whannell will co-produce with Tim Walsh, who will act as showrunner. The show’s writers include Krystal Ziv Houghton and James Roland, who worked on Season 2 of the recently cancelled Purge TV show. The Upgrade series will be co-produced by Blumhouse, the studio behind the movie, and UCP, a division of NBCUniversal.

In related news, Blumhouse’s next Purge movie, The Forever Purge, has been delayed because of the COVID-19 pandemic. It was originally set to hit theaters in July and does not yet have a new release date.
