The Tower's Gemma Whelan called out by police for BIG blunder while filming new crime thriller

THE Tower's Gemma Whelan was called out by police for a BIG blunder while filming her new crime thriller.

The three-part ITV drama follows Gemma's character Sarah as she investigates the deaths of a police officer and a teenage civilian, who both fell from a London tower block in mysterious circumstances.

Gemma was excited to take on her role as a detective, and told The Sun's TV Mag how she "chewed the ears off" the real life coppers who worked with the production.

However, they weren't afraid to tell her when she made a big mistake in one particular scene.

She explained: "There were detectives and I was wearing a forensic suit and it would take you a very long time to take a forensic suit off on camera and it's not very interesting to watch.

"But they said I handed it to the wrong person. They said it would go straight into an evidence bag. They said, ‘You would actually still have it on, but I think because you’re half out of it, it’s OK because you're out of the tent.’

"They tell you exactly what that should look like, and then they said ‘It would go straight into an evidence bag, it would not go anywhere near anyone's hands.’"

As well as the real life detectives, the show also had pathologists and a mortuary assistant visit the set to make sure they were filming things accurately.

Gemma added: "I'm always in awe of people who actually do it for a living."

Gemma stars in The Tower alongside former Hollyoaks actor Emmett J Scanlon, Jimy Akingbola and Tahirah Sharif.

Speaking about Emmett's character DI Kieran Shaw, Gemma said: "Emmett is a lovely Irishmen, but his character and Sarah do not meet eye to eye at all.

"I get angry with him as Gemma for some of his opinions and his ways, but he's representative of certain characteristics and he's fun to play against because he's not someone that Sarah really gets on with."

The Tower starts on Monday, November 8 at 9pm on ITV. To read more from Gemma's interview with TV Mag, pick up your free copy this Saturday, only in The Sun.
