The Handmaid’s Tale is the dystopian science-fiction series on Hulu that has been running for four seasons now. It is one of Hulu’s most popular series and was a smash-hit when it premiered back in 2017. With the season four finale on the horizon (June 16), will the series be back for season five?

Will there be a fifth season of The Handmaid’s Tale?

The Handmaid’s Tale was renewed for a fifth season back in December of 2020.

Hulu clearly isn’t giving up on the series as it still proves to be massively popular.

News of season five actually broke when star Elisabeth Moss, who plays June Osborne, shared the announcement on her personal Twitter.

In the post which was shared on December 10, 2020, Moss wrote: “Season 4 coming to you in 2021 and… we have been renewed for a season 5!!!

“Thank you to all of the fans of the show who make it possible for us to keep working on this show that we love so dearly.”

There is no release date yet for season five, though it will most likely drop at a similar time to season four.

Each season has seen a first-quarter release, with season four originally premiering on April 27.

However, season five could be the final season for the series with Hulu hinting that the end is in sight for the Margaret Atwood novel adaptation.

Series showrunner Brice Miller told The Hollywood Reporter that season four was a “pivot point” for the show.

Despite this, there is plenty of Handmaid’s Tale content on the horizon, with both season five and the announcement of a spin-off series in the works.

Way back in 2019, Hulu announced they were adapting another one of Margaret Atwood’s books – The Testaments.

The original novel picks will 15 years after the events of the original book of the same name as the series.

Production on the spin-off slowed due to the Coronavirus Pandemic, with little details emerging following its announcement.

With the spin-off’s story being a sequel to the original tale, it could mean the end of The Handmaid’s Tale is insight.

However, there has been no confirmation from Hulu on this, with more details likely emerging following the premiere of the season four finale.

It isn’t known if Elisabeth Moss will return for The Testaments as the details of the season will rely on the sequence of events from season five of The Handmaid’s Tale.

The finale of season four is titled The Wilderness and the synopsis reads: “June draws on all her resources and relationships, risking everything to ensure her own kind of justice.”

Fans have been sharing their excitement for the season four finale on social media, with many of them sharing their opinions on Twitter.

One fan said: “SUCH A GREAT SHOW, season 4 has been AMAZING!”

Another fan added: “The handmaid’s tale being the best show in existence I fear.”

A third commented: “I wish there were 20 episodes a season! It’s the best tv series I’ve seen. There’s so many emotions on all different kind of levels. Thanks for great writing, acting, & directing.”

The Handmaid’s Tale is available to watch exclusively on Hulu.
