The Handmaid’s Tale season 4: June’s fate sealed in shock ending reveal

Warning: This spoiler contains major spoilers for The Testaments and The Handmaid’s Tale season three.

The Handmaid’s Tale fans were sent into a frenzy after season three was left on the cliffhanger of June Osborne (played by Elisabeth Moss) being shot by a guard after trying to rescue 52 children from Gilead. However, the new book that hit shelves last week has finally revealed June’s fate.

However, June fails to feature in the book until the final chapter, leaving fans to fear she is dead or has continued to suffer at the hands of Gilead.

Taking place 15 years after the first novel, the new book leaves June behind and is spoken from the perspective of Aunt Lydia’s (Ann Dowd) and June’s now grown-up daughters Nichole and Hannah Bankole (Jordana Blake).

This suggests the next outing could well see two new cast members take to set as June’s older daughters.

Moreover, the it seems Aunt Lydia could take over as the lead.

But what about June?

The new novel brings a huge contrast to the previous outings of the TV adaptation as June is barely mentioned at all.

However, near the very end of the book, her fate is finally revealed.

It seems as though June got her happy ending living with both of her daughters, Nichole and Hannah.

The pair are revealed to be living safely with their mother, who walks into their room smiling to see them.

Therefore, revealing June survived her ordeal at the hands of Gilead after all.

Although bosses have already revealed the book will take a huge role in the writing and production of season four, there is no guarantee the show will follow suit.

With June playing such a huge role in the past three outings it’s unlikely she will go without mention for quite as long.

However, it is certainly plausible the show will see a new female lead.

A new lead isn’t the only bombshell set to rock the show as the author also revealed what’s next for Gilead.

In an interview with Weekend Edition Saturday, the author teased the show could see Gilead end if it follows suit of the books.

Margaret began: “As we knew from Book One, Gilead does end.”

Moreover, Margaret teased a double agent twist as someone could destroy Gilead from the inside.

It seems someone is working from the inside to take down the regime as the author revealed her inspiration when writing the novel.

She added: “So it may not surprise you to know that I was pretty interested in double agents and people working from inside totalitarian regimes, against those regimes, when I was writing this book,” she said.

Who could be the one to take down the regime?
