The Crown series five start date has been revealed as November 2022.

Imelda Staunton, who will be portraying Queen Elizabeth II in the fifth season, shared a video message over the weekend posted to Netflix's official YouTube channel.

The actress, 65, who is taking over the role from previous stars Olivia Colman and Claire Foy, admitted that her stomach is doing "somersaults" and she hopes to maintain the "very high standard" they have set.

Imelda said: "Hello I'm Imelda Staunton and I'm currently on the set of The Crown.

"Where we have just begun filming season five. I'm delighted to be here, inheriting the role of Queen Elizabeth II from two outstanding actresses.

"Most recently, the wonderful Olivia Colman, and who could forget the actress who originated the part? Claire Foy.

"I will do my utmost to maintain the very high standard that they set. Hopefully, I look calm, collected and capable. My stomach, meanwhile, is doing somersaults.

"On behalf of the cast and crew, we look forward to bringing you the next season of The Crown in November 2022."

Netflix also captioned the video with: "Imelda Staunton, our new Queen Elizabeth, has a message from the set of The Crown. Season 5, coming November 2022."

Last month, the hit Netflix show released the first look at Elizabeth Debicki and Dominic West pictured as Princess Diana and Prince Charles for series five.

In the images, it saw Dominic, 51, transform into the Prince of Wales as he wore a brown trouser suit and stared into the distance while standing outside.

While Elizabeth, 30, was the spitting image of Princess Diana as she replicated her soft gaze and sported her signature blonde cropped hairdo while lounging on a sofa.

The Crown's official Instagram account shared the two new portraits, tweeting: "Our new Prince Charles (Dominic West) and Princess Diana (Elizabeth Debicki)."

The hit series on Netflix follows the Royal Family up to the start of the 21st century, which means Diana's tragic death in 1997 will feature in the show.

Creators behind the Netflix series announced that Elizabeth was joining the cast prior to this alongside Imelda, Game of Thrones star Jonathan Pryce and Lesley Manville playing The Queen, Prince Philip and Princess Margaret respectively.
