Stranger Things season 4: Were the Russians collecting Demogorgons? Where have they gone?

Stranger Things season four is eagerly awaited by fans after the cliffhanger of series three hinted there was more drama to come. Ahead of the announcement of the new series, fans have been developing theories about what could happen next in the sci-fi series. One theory focuses on the Demogorgon that was revealed in the post-credits scene of the Stranger Things season three finale – here’s what you need to know.

Were the Russians collecting Demogorgons in Stranger Things?

WARNING: This article contains spoilers for Stranger Things season 3

Stranger Things season three ended with the tragic death of Chief Hopper (played by David Harbour).

The character was killed in an explosion to close the gate the Russians had created to the Upside Down.

This seemed to be the end of the threat facing the residents of Hawkins, Indiana from the alternate realm.

However, a post-credits scene moved the action across the world to Kamchatka in Russia.

In the scene, a prisoner was described as being fed to a Demogorgon in a top-secret prison.

The fact there are still Demogorgons has sparked a number of questions about the Russian’s use of creatures.

Fans of the show will know that the Demogorgons have been a threat since the first series of the show, thanks to their endless hunger.

They live in the Upside Down, which means the Russians must have captured the creature before the gate was blown up in the finale.

Given they captured one, it is possible the Russians may have a whole load of Demogorgons from the Upside Down.

If they’ve gone to the trouble of catching them, it is possible they’re planning to use them as the Cold War develops in season four.

Earlier on in the series, Erica Sinclair (Priyah Ferguson) also revealed to the others there were several 7ft cages in the Russians underground base beneath Starcourt Mall.

This seems to imply that the Russians had been collecting Demogorgons in the lead up to reopening the gate – or were at least planning to.

However, it is not clear whether they actually have them and after the explosion at the end, it is not clear where they went if they did.

Fans have been posting on Reddit about what this could mean for future series of Stranger Things.

User thatuiowaguy wrote: “It’s clear by the post-credit that they were collecting Demogorgons for something.”

OJMorris17 agreed: “Yes they were definitely collecting them, Erica pointed out the 7ft tall cages in the underground base. They probably wanted them for war reasons.”

Co-creator Ross Duffer also recently spoke to Entertainment Weekly about the role the Demogorgons could play.

He said: “Assuming there’s a season four, obviously the question of who that American is in that cell and then also what they’re doing with the Demogorgon, is a tease.”

He added: “That’s obviously going to play a huge role in a potential season four.”

How the Russians will control the Demogorgon they have remains to be seen as they have typically obeyed the Mindflayer who was defeated in season three.

Fans of the show will just have to wait until season four to see what the role the creatures might play.

Stranger Things season 3 is available on Netflix now.
