Stranger Things star Francesca Reale has revealed that the show was so top secret about everything that was happening in season three they wouldn’t even let her see the scripts to audition.
The 24-year-old actress is introduced into the world of Hawkins as Heather – who works alongside Billy Hargrove (Dacre Montgomery) at the local pool.
However, it doesn’t take long for her to be entangled into the messy supernatural world hidden underneath the quiet Indiana town.
Speaking to Metro.co.uk, Heather revealed that while she was aware she was auditioning for the show, she had no idea just what she was getting herself into – in fact, she hadn’t even seen the script.
‘I did know what I was going in for. I knew that it was for Stranger Things,’ she told us. ‘Ultimately the information I got for the role was the same as everyone else when it was announced.
‘I knew she was a lifeguard at the community pool and you know, that’s literally all I knew. They wouldn’t even give me a scene from the scripts, they gave me these dummy sides from Scream.
‘The most famous scene in the whole movie, which is the most frustrating thing because it’s the scene where Drew Barrymore is talking on the phone to the serial killer and talking about their favourite scary movie.’
While this might seem easy enough for some, Francesca revealed it became frustrating because it meant that she had to try and find a way to make it her own to get the casting team’s attention – and with a scene that iconic that’s far easier said than done.
‘I put myself on tape and I worked with one of my best friends in LA to find a way to make this very famous scene original and stand out in some kind of way,’ she said. Then I was called in for a callback with casting and I did the scene once more with them, then they offered me the part.’
‘I honestly thought they were joking, like it was another layer of the audition process that I was in, so it took me a while to finally…I thought they were pranking me. I was like, “this is funny-ish but I’m going to cry if you’re lying,”’ she added.
‘It was one of the strangest auditions I’ve had, which is fitting because it’s Stranger Things.’
Thankfully the work paid off for her – and it turns out the scene was more connected to the story than she initially realised.
(Don’t worry though, we won’t be spoiling it for you).
This season, the kids are tacking a new big bad that could spell the end of life as they know it for them.
That, and they have to deal with the fact that they’re growing up – and that comes with its own problems.
Stranger Things 3 is available on Netflix now.
