Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley) has found himself at the beck and call of villainous DI Malone (Mark Womack) in Emmerdale, but — in spite of his efforts to keep such a thing a secret — Moira (Natalie J Robb) has taken it upon herself to investigate his strange behaviour, and one can’t help but wonder if her attempts to get to the bottom of what’s going on will result in the pair rekindling their romance?
Malone wasted little time in making himself at home when he arrived in the eponymous village earlier this year, and — with history with Will (Dean Andrews) — he set about forging an alliance not only with he but also with his boss Cain, and scrapyard employee Billy (Jay Kontzle).
Cain was having none of it at first, but the evil detective made clear just what he’s capable of when he murdered Moira’s bull, and threatened to have Billy put behind bars over a fictionalised assault charge — using the young lad’s previous history with the law as a bargaining chip.
Left with little choice, Cain agreed to aid Malone in one more job — which arrives next week — but this week, the stress of his new partnership with the copper has been getting to him — something which Moira has begun to pick up on.
During Wednesday’s episode, she quizzed her soon-to-be-ex-husband about what’s troubling him, but naturally he refused to enlighten her.
Moira refused to give up, and therefore sought out Harriet (Katherine Dow Blyton) for advice, and the vicar revealed that there has been tension aplenty between Cain and Will in recent weeks.
Moira’s interest was piqued for sure, and during tonight’s instalment, she continued to question Cain — who took great delight in reminding her that, given they’re not together, this has nothing to do with her.
However, Moira remained steadfast in her position, reminding him that as long as they have kids together, she will do whatever it takes to protect them, but — in spite of her convincing argument — Cain remained shtum on the matter.
Moira is hellbent on figuring out what Cain is up to, but whether she does so or not remains to be seen.
However, given that she’s proven that nothing is more important to her than family, one could argue that her discovering the truth is perhaps an inevitability, and — if that does prove to be the case — then she’ll no doubt do whatever it takes to help Cain out of this mess, and get Malone out of his life once and for all.
Let’s not forget that she lied to the police and covered up the part Cain played in Nate’s (Jurrell Carter) shooting earlier this year, so she has already proven that she’ll do anything to protect him.
What’s more, the aforementioned incident with Nate was the catalyst that brought Malone into their lives, so perhaps she’ll feel some degree of responsibility, and therefore will resolve to get rid of him?
If she does pull out all the stops to rescue her former beau, could this lead to their romance being rekindled?
Moira has made it clear that she would get back with Cain in a heartbeat, but — after her affair with Nate last year — Cain isn’t willing to forgive and forget.
However, if Moira aids in getting Malone out of their lives then she’ll be able to prove just how much she still loves Cain, and who knows what feelings could come to light in the process?
Emmerdale continues Monday 27 April at 7pm on ITV.
