Fans of Riverdale are champing at the bit for any news about the forthcoming series of the show after season four was cut short and series five postponed until next year. There have been fan theories swirling suggesting The Vampire Diaries star Nina Dobrev could be appearing in Riverdale in the future. looks at whether the star will be in the new episodes.

Is Nina Dobrev in Riverdale?

Actress Dobrev whipped Riverdale fans into a frenzy after she shared some snaps with some of the cast of the hit series.

She recently posted a selection of black-and-white photos with actresses Camila Mendes, Lili Reinhart and Madelaine Petsch.

Dobrev simply captioned the Instagram gallery, which she shared with her 21.2 million followers: “All the worlds colliding #tb.”

Mendes replied with a couple of emojis, while The Vampire Diaries creator Julie Plec wrote underneath: “Riverdale hang! Wear masks.”

From the post, it appears these images are a throwback which suggests Dobrev may have already completed filming on the show.

Although the post doesn’t confirm anything, the location of the shots was tagged as Vancouver, British Columbia where Riverdale is filmed.

Riverdale is well versed in stunt casting given the meta nature of the show and its nods to pop culture.

Dobrev’s inclusion in the show would come as no surprise given the cast members featured on Riverdale.

The drama starred the late Luke Perry, the 1990s heartthrob of Beverly Hills, 90210, 1980s teen queen Molly Ringwald and more recently Chad Michael Murray of 2000s series One Tree Hill.

But the connections between The Vampire Diaries and Riverdale don’t end there after writer and director Plec helmed a 2018 episode of The CW show.

In fact, she even filmed on location at a site previously featured in The Vampire Diaries’ pilot episode which was shot in Canada before the show relocated to Atlanta, Georgia.

She told Bustle at the time: “It was so funny, I had seen Thistlehouse on camera but it hadn’t registered with me.”

Plec continued: “And when we pulled up the driveway for the location scout to go see it, I was like, ‘This is so familiar. I feel like I’ve been here before.’

“I actually took a good look at the house and realized it was the Salvatore House from [The Vampire Diaries] pilot. Isn’t that hilarious?

“Because we shot the pilot in Vancouver [before moving to Atlanta for the series].

“And the backyard of it which is so gorgeous is where we built our cemetery. That was a nice flashback!”

Although fans will have to wait and see if Dobrev is in the new series, season five is going to be kicking off with the remaining episodes from the fourth outing.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, these instalments weren’t completed in time and so season four was truncated.

But given their importance marking the end of high school, they were filmed at a later date and will start off the new series.

Once these episodes are out of the way, fans will then see a five-year time-jump during which the main foursome will have gone to college and moved onto the next part of their lives.

Fans should be prepared to see the end of some big romances between Archie Andrews (played by KJ Apa) and Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes) and Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse) and Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart).

The characters are likely to have changed markedly in this time by their experiences with new romances on the cards.

Riverdale season 5 will premiere on The CW on January 20, 2021 and Netflix UK on January 21, 2021
