Viewers were stunned after the latest episode of the popular Power spin-off taunted Tariq (played by Michael Rainey Jr) with a letter from his dead father, James ‘Ghost’ St Patrick (Omari Hardwick). With fans now speculating whether the dead crime lord could finally come back to the Starz series, has an alternative theory for who could be messing with Tariq.

Another familiar face could be returning to the world of Power by the end of Ghost’s second season.

In the latest episode, Coming Home To Roost, Tariq was arrested for the murder of Officer Ramirez (Shalim Ortiz) after his badge was found in Tariq’s dorm room.

While Tariq wasn’t directly responsible for the death, it seems he’s finally paying for the other crimes he’s committed throughout the series.

After being escorted off-campus, Tariq is handed a letter from his father which was instructed to be handed to him if he’s ever arrested.

Ghost explains he always knew Tariq would end up in this position, and his mocking from beyond the grave serves as a bleak reminder of his father’s legacy.

There’s almost no way Ghost could actually return from the series, as viewers saw him shot dead by his own son at the end of the mainline show’s sixth season.

Tariq was forced to continue his life of crime in the spin-off by selling drugs to pay for college, even killing one of his professors to cover up his illegal activities.

Unfortunately, his new career path has forced him to make some impossible decisions, including ratting out his father’s former partner Tommy Egan (Joseph Sikora).

With Tommy’s story set to continue in his own spin-off, Power Book IV: Force, there’s a strong chance he could pop up again later in Book II.

Moreover, he may have already made his presence known with the letter sent to Tariq at the end of the latest episode.

Fans who have been watching from the beginning weren’t so sure if Ghost was actually the person who sent his son the taunting message.

Many of them felt the note was out of character, and didn’t believe Ghost would be so petty as to leave Tariq a taunting letter for after his death.

On Reddit, user OLKv3 complained: “I hated it, it’s so out of character for Ghost and the way he treated Tariq.”

And Fluid_Stuff3967 said: “I’m not buying it. It’s not congruent with his character. Ghost loved Tariq.”

Others were also disappointed the series didn’t bring back former lead Omari to voice the letter.

However, this could be yet another clue that Ghost wasn’t actually the one who wrote it.

Instead, Tommy could be planting the seeds for his own revenge plan after being exposed and chased out of town at the end of season one.

He’ll be setting up shop in Chicago when his own series gets going, but he could still be setting the stage to return to New York and take down Tariq once and for all.

Ghost could very well be returning for flashback scenes in Tommy’s new series, so his master plan could slowly be revealed once the first season gets going early next year.

Power Book II: Ghost season two continues Sunday, January 9 on Starz.
