Outlander season 5 spoilers: Claire Fraser star reveals what makes her so special

In previous Outlander seasons Claire and husband Jamie (played by Sam Heughan) have appeared as the perfect couple and fans have fallen in love with them.

The pair’s relationship has developed over time as they have grown older and moved from Scotland to the modern world in America.

No journey has been more transformative than Claire’s in the time-travelling Starz drama and her development is set to continue into season five.

Her role as a grandmother will test her further and the transformation of Claire is the aspect of the role that Caitriona loves most.

It has been incredible to walk that life with this character

At Starz’s FYC event at Century city in Los Angeles, she spoke on a panel about season four and her character and was there to hear her responses.

Asked what it is like to go from playing a modern woman in the 20th century to playing her in an ever where “women have no agency”, she said: “That has been the great thing of playing this character.

“We’ve taken her as a young woman – she was definitely in her late 20s – and her husband was the person she deferred to in so many ways. Claire has grown so much through this.

“Claire is now in her mid-50s. It has been incredible to walk that life with this character and watch her grow. Claire was a very hot-headed and quick-tempered person.

“Her need for justice and her need to be able to say something in the moment hasn’t changed but what has been interesting is to watch her become wiser and not as tempestuous and to learn a little calm.”

She went on to add: ”That’s the beauty of being able to do a show. We’ve been at it six to one-and-a-half years. You get to let these characters evolve in a very organic way. I think Sam and I have loved being given that opportunity to take these characters on such a journey.”

The time-travelling nature of the show means that fans see different sides of Claire and allow her to have an enhanced wisdom through experience.

She also spoke about how she is able to say slavery is wrong after living in era in which it had been abolished.

Claire will have to deal with Jamie’s problems as he has a huge decision to make and it could end up breaking them.

Season five will see Jamie attempt to track down Murtagh Fraser (Duncan Lacroix) after finding out he is still alive.

It will be up to Jamie to find him and bring about some justice.

Executive producer and show runner Matthew B. Roberts has spoken out what lies ahead for the Frasers in the next series.

He revealed to “There’s some fantastic stuff coming up with how Jamie and Claire have to navigate this.

“Let’s just say Jamie is clearly between a rock and a hard place, the rock being his signed oath to the Crown, to Governor Tryon [Tim Downie], for the land that they live on, and his loyalty and his love for Murtagh.

“So, that is going to cause the Frasers some trouble as we go forward in season five and we’ll see how they get out of it or if they get out of it.”

Meanwhile, he has also revealed major storylines might have to be cut as they adapt the source material for TV.

Outlander season five is expected to return to STARZ and Amazon Prime Video later this year.
