Netflix’s five biggest original series launches – from Bridgerton to The Witcher

Netflix has kept us all entertained throughout lockdown and has been releasing incredible original productions every month.

In 2020 we saw the likes of Love is Blind, Too Hot To Handle, The Queen's Gambit and plenty more hit the small screen.

The streaming platform's original series are known for giving many up-and-coming actors a platform, with many being launched to super-stardom after being cast in their projects.

With so many different options to choose from, it's hard to imagine what the top five would be, but statistics don't lie…

These are the five original series that have scored the biggest launches on Netflix, with the most people watching them in their first four weeks.

5. Bridgerton

Bridgerton was released on Christmas Day 2020 and became Netflix's fifth most-watched original series debut ever.

Attracting a whopping 63 million viewers, the period drama – dubbed the '19th century Gossip Girl' – has been a huge hit for the show's creator Shonda Rhimes, the brain behind production giant Shondaland, who were behind Grey's Anatomy and Scandal.

The first series had eight episodes, and followed the Duke of Hastings and Daphne Bridgerton's love story, as well as the overarching storyline where we had to figure out who the mysterious 'Lady Whistledown' was.

Rumors have been floating about, saying we could expect a whopping eight seasons of the show, so if you were a fan of the steamy sex scenes, you're in luck.

4. Tiger King

Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness was just ahead of Bridgerton, racking up 64 million viewers in its premiere, with the viral eight-episode documentary series following the lives of Joe Exotic and Carole Baskin.

The bizarre show, which followed the big cat lovers' lives and their ongoing feud turned both Exotic and Baskin into worldwide celebrities, despite the former being in prison.

Baskin has since gone on to appear on Dancing With The Stars in the US and her catchphrase "hello you cool cats and kittens" has become one that's familiar around the globe.

3. Stranger Things

Hitting 64 million views again, Stranger Things' third season quickly became Netflix's third most-viewed original series, after a record number of people tuned it within the first four weeks of it launching on the platform.

The third instalment of the hit 80s sci-fi series premiered in July 2019, and fans are eagerly awaiting a fourth series.

2. Money Heist

Crime drama Money Heist was all anyone could talk about in the early lockdown days, and its 65 million views in its first month proves that.

After the buzz around Don't F**k With Cats and Tiger King had died down, people turned into the series, which followed the story of thieves trying to rob the Royal Mint of Spain.

1. The Witcher

Taking the number one spot is eight-episode series, The Witcher, which made its Netflix debut in December 2019.

Attracting an incredible 76 million views, it's currently unbeatable for its early-on success.
