Netflix vs Disney Plus: Which Streaming Service Is Worth Your Money?

Your wish is coming true. With Disney’s streaming service called “Disney Plus,” new Star Wars, Marvel, and Disney cartoon series’ will be available for watching anytime, anywhere. But will this streaming service better than Netflix? Find out if subscribing to Disney Plus is worth it for you.

What will be leaving Netflix?

If you hop on Netflix right now, you’ll probably find a few Disney movies available for streaming, but the move has already begun. Disney is taking its movies off of Netflix and moving them to their own streaming service, Disney Plus. This subscription service does not premiere until November 2019, so there’s still some time to weigh whether buying another version of Netflix is worth your money.

Disney owns 21st Century Fox, ABC, Star Wars, Marvel, Pixar… the list goes on. That means a lot of the Disney-owned movies currently on Netflix will be leaving within the next year. You better squeeze in Pocahontas and Ant-Man and the Wasp as much as you can.

How much does Disney Plus cost?

One of the major perks of Disney Plus is the vast array of movies and television shows. Disney Plus will have everything from The Simpsons to Pirates of the Caribbean.

Netflix still holds Disney movies for a little while longer. However, Disney movies released in 2019 will only be available for streaming on Disney Plus. This includes Avengers: Endgame, The Lion King, Aladdin, and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. If you want to stream any of those recent movies, subscribing to Disney Plus is your best bet.

According to The New York Times, Disney Plus will cost viewers $7 per month. Subscribers can also opt to pay for a yearly subscription for an upfront cost of $69.99. This is in comparison to Netflix’s cheapest plan, $9 per month, and its standard plan, $13 per month.

Are there going to be original movies and series by Disney Plus?

According to Disney, says Variety, “the service — in its first year — will include 25 original series, 10 original films and specials, 500 films and 7,500 episodes of current and past TV shows.”

One original series coming to Disney Plus follows the story of the Avengers character, Hawkeye, played in the Marvel Cinematic Universe by Jeremy Renner. The actor will reprise his role for the upcoming television series.

Another original series, The Mandalorian, will be Star Wars’ first ever live-action television show. Taking place after the Empire but before the First Order, this tells the story of a Mandalorian gunfighter. A Rogue One-esque Star Wars series will also be available on Disney Plus.

Some Disney shows made available in other countries will also be on Disney Plus. Just in time for Donald’s 85th Birthday, Disney announced the United States reunion of Panchito, José, and Donald Duck. The television series, Legend of The Three Caballeros, will be available for streaming on Disney’s new service.

This is not a new series, as it was already available on DisneyLife in the Philippines and on Disney Deluxe in Japan, however, this will be the first time in a long time that the Three Caballeros return with new stories in the United States.

Disney Plus releases in the United States on November 12, 2019.
