Monty Don has hit out at BBC viewers after a number of them commented on his use of kitchen bowls for his gardening mulch on Gardeners' World.
Viewers had commented that the bowls must be "his wife's" as they were from the kitchen, and that Sarah would have been unhappy about the crockery becoming dirty.
He took to Twitter and wrote: "Surprised at the number of comments referring to 'my wife' being exasperated that I used 'her' kitchen bowls in the mulch item.
"This seems fantastically old-fashioned. We share everything as equals – including kitchen utensils!"
A number of his 219,000 followers got in touch to share their own experiences in the gardening community – and it seems they've also been subject to comments of a similar tone.
"Unfortunately not surprising – I had two different things 'explained' to me by two different men down at the allotments yesterday," wrote one. "I'd not asked for their 'advice' I didn't need it and… they were both utterly wrong!
"Sexist and stereotypical gender role assignments still prevails."
A second commented: "I've had people moaning about my plot. 'It's messy and full of weeds.'

"I said if they have time to moan and as they are retired and have more time than me, which they reminded me regularly and have no jobs left to do on their own, they could lend me a helping hand."
Another wrote: "In my 30s I got an allotment with the added hope of it bringing me closer to the local community.

"It was ghastly, so nasty, spiteful and unhelpful. I was so disappointed as I really thought it would be a kind inclusive community."
While some appeared to agree with the comments about Monty's wife and her bowls.
One said: "My wife/finance/war department doesn't agree, when I used 'our' dishwasher to clean 'our' motorcycle engine bits, quickly and noticeably it became 'her' dishwasher and 'my' motorcycle engine bits."
And another added: "Ah we gardeners are an old fashioned lot! I must admit to using old spoons for digging in small pots and the kitchen scissors are always lost somewhere in the garden after I have been tying in."
Gardeners' World returned for a new series last month, while the third episode aired over the weekend as an Easter Special.
As well as Monty mulching his borders, Strictly star JJ Chalmers presented a segment about how his local park helped his rehabilitation, and there was a colourful section about daffodils.
