Mike Bushell reveals brutal Strictly Come Dancing training regime in exclusive chat: ‘My body is broken in a way I never thought it could be’

You may know Mike Bushell as that presenter who fell in the swimming pool while interviewing British olympians or as the affable BBC Breakfast star who regularly takes on sporting challenges.

Now, Mike, 53, is taking on perhaps one of his toughest challenges to date by featuring on the 2019 series of Strictly Come Dancing.

He is one of 13 celebrities battling it out for the Strictly crown and has been partnered with Katya Jones, 30.

In an exclusive chat with OK! online, Mike revealed how training is going and made the huge claim that this has been his biggest challenge to date.

He said: “I’ve done over 550 different sports, trying them out to inspire people to get involved in those. Some of them have been really extreme whether it is wing walking or something like that, very physical.”

“But this is the biggest and most physical challenge yet. Already, two days into training i’m aching all over, i’ve got sores under my feet, my body is broken in a way I never thought it could be.

"Mentally I’m exhausted and towards the end of each day’s training I’m literally in a mental fog trying to remember all the moves with the music playing.

“So this is definitely the ultimate physical and mental challenge, it’s a really extreme sport I would say, dancing to music and learning all the moves and trying to get your body into positions I’ve never had to get them in before.

“Strictly and dancing has to be the most extreme thing ever” he continued.

“In terms of the athleticism, learning to dance using all your muscles, waking up those muscles you never thought you had and also the mental side of trying to remember all the stops and then not only that but doing it in front of a live TV audience on the Strictly dance floor.

Mike has admitted that the prospect of dancing in front of a live studio audience is ‘terrifying’ but says that it is a challenge he couldn't have turned down.

“I suppose i’m dreading that moment when we step out to the announcement and make our first walk down the steps and then perform that first live dance in front of the TV audience that is going to be terrifying. “

"Everyone whose been on it before said that it is terrifying but i’ve just got to learn the dance so well that nothing can go wrong.

“It’s terrifying but what a challenge, so there was no way I could ever have turned that down,” he stated.

He also said that he wants to inspire parents and dad’s to get up and dance and not feel embarrassed for doing so.

“I want to challenge myself but also represent parent/dad dancers that feel embarrassed to get up on the dance floor at parties or at weddings” he added.

“I want to show them that they should do it, just get up there, through their inhibitions to the wind, and have the fun that you can get from dancing but also the exercise.”

The father of three, has been very active on social media, particularly Instagram, during his training, sharing updates of how he is getting on each day.

In one funny clip, Mike hid in a cupboard from Katya to get a break from training and another showed the presenter fail while truing to do a slide in his knee pads.

He has, however, praised his dance partner for her dedication and said that he thinks he’d struggle without her.

“With Katya as my teacher I have got the best chance of going a long way but without her and her brilliance and creativity, I think it would be a struggle for me because I need the best. I need that expert tuition and coaching on every level.

“Because she’s such a hard worker and pushes you to the limits I think she can take me much further than I personally expect.

“Expectations are literally to get to maybe week three but with Katya and her record maybe we can get to halloween, maybe we can get to Blackpool and maybe even musicals week but it’s such a long way off. Certainly not really thinking about the final.”
