If two series set in the Archie Comics universe isn’t enough, how about three? Fans of Riverdale will be happy to hear that a new series from the same creator, titled Katy Keene, is headed to your TV screens in the near future. Here’s a look at the show and the lead character, played by Pretty Little Liars actress Lucy Hale.
Who is Katy Keene?
The new series is, like Riverdale, based off of comics from the Archie Comics universe. The character was first seen in other comics, then received her own title in 1949, comprised of two volumes. Katy was known as “America’s Queen of Pin-Ups and Fashions.”
The character evolved over time, but according to one description, “Katy Keene was a glamorous brunette college student when she was first discovered as a potential fashion model at age 21. After a brief stint as an aspiring Broadway performer, Katy rose to stardom as a model, singer, and actress.”
Lucy Hale stars in the spinoff
In 2018, it was announced that Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, creator of Riverdale and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina was developing another series for the CW based in the same universe. This became official in 2019 with the pilot and eventual series order for Katy Keene.
It was on March 11, 2019, that the series named its eponymous star. Lucy Hale, best known for Pretty Little Liars and short-lived CW shows such as Privileged and Life Sentence, would be playing Katy Keene herself.
Watch the brand-new trailer here
Promotional materials and teasers have been released in the past few months. However, TCA 2019 brought with it the first official panel discussion and full-length trailer for Katy Keene, as seen above.
In it, we see that Katy is a wannabe fashion designer living in New York City, working at the fictional Lacy’s Department Store. Other characters from the comics include her boyfriend, K.O. Kelly, the Cabot siblings, and Pepper Smith. Ashleigh Murray, who has played Josie McCoy in Riverdale for the show’s run thus far, will move to the new series to continue portraying the musician.
Will there be any Riverdale crossover episodes?
From the trailer, we see that Josie already knows Katy, meaning perhaps Katy is also from Riverdale in this world. Does that mean that we’ll be seeing some of our other favorite Riverdale characters, like maybe Josie’s former beau, Archie?
According to Deadline, you can definitely expect a couple of cameo appearances Katy Keene’s future. “I think it’s very likely that we will be seeing some familiar faces from Riverdale crossing over to our Katy Keene show and our New York world and we’re excited about that.”
There’s no official premiere date yet
As of now, Katy Keene is simply “coming soon,” with a premiere date in 2020 to be expected. Chances are, this means that it will take the slot of another primetime series, either one that will go on hiatus or in the case of a likely cancelation, beginning around January or February. Stay tuned for more updates on the series.
