John Travolta Explains His Side of the Taylor Swift VMAs Mix-Up

“The Fanatic” star appeared to almost hand Swift’s VMA for “You Need to Calm Down” to “RuPaul’s Drag Race” alum and Swift look-a-like Jade Jolie.

John Travolta is choosing to just shake it off after his latest awards show snafu, this time appearing to almost give Taylor Swift’s VMA Award to "RuPaul’s Drag Race" alum and Swift lookalike Jade Jolie instead of the "You Need to Calm Down" singer.

The moment immediately went viral, after Travolta had already made a point of mentioning his own previous screw-up when he somehow turned Idina Menzel’s name into Adele Dazeem.

According to Travolta, though, while he admitted he was a little overwhelmed, he insists he never thought Jolie was Swift. Speaking to Hot 93.3 in Dallas-Fort Worth on Thursday, "The Fanatic" star said.

"There’s so many people that bombarded the stage, that I was looking for [Swift]. So the video has me trying to find her, and you know, I thought it was so funny the way it was interpreted, and it was cool, I didn’t care."

The way he sees it, it doesn’t seem to matter what he does, it’s going to make headlines. "Sometimes I fantasize what if I had given it to [Jolie]? That would have been awesome," he laughed. "I should have just gone all the way with it."

But that’s not how it looked to choreographer Todrick Hall, who co-executive produced Swift’s VMA-winning video for "You Need to Calm Down" and joine d her on stage. He broke down what he saw during an appearance on "Jerry O" on Wednesday.

"[Travolta] was so confident that it was her," Hall told host Jerry O’Connell. "I loved it, I saw it and we talked about it backstage. Taylor thought it was hilarious."

"Jade Jolie has made quite the living performing at Play nightclub and she is a fantastic drag queen," Hall continued. "Everybody knows that she is the Taylor Swift doppelgänger, so I think that was the highest compliment he could ever pay her. He was very confused."

During the must-see moment, Travolta joined Queen Latifah on stage to hand out one of the night’s biggest awards. Poking fun at himself prior to announcing the winner, Travolta looked at Latifah and said, "I shouldn’t do this! Because I’ll just mispronounce shit and f–k it up. You do it. You do it."

She complied.

After Latifah announced Swift’s "You Need to Calm Down" had claimed the coveted moonperson, the singer mouthed "what the f–k" to one of her many co-stars as the group flocked to the stage.

Jolie beat the real Taylor Swift to the stage, prompting Travolta to stare awkwardly, start to hand over the award, realize it wasn’t the right person and swap it out for a cringeworthy side hug.
