Loose Women’s Janet Street-Porter got seriously irate about vegans on today’s show and compared them to a ‘militant campaign’.
The 73-year-old panelist fumed to Andrea McLean, Gloria Hunniford and Judi Love about people who don’t eat meat during a segment which posed the question of whether we should be ‘more sympathetic towards vegans’.
Responding to guidelines issued by The Vegan Society regarding giving those who practice the diet their own shelf in the office fridge and a different place to prepare their food in the kitchen, Janet kicked off: ‘When is it going to end?’
‘Vegans are still a small percentage of the British population and yet they attract the most publicity minded people and through an organisation like the Vegan Society every day we get press releases and it’s like a militant campaign with unrelenting demands,’ she continued.
‘Now their own shelf in the office? Can you imagine that? What do they want next, own areas in restaurants? You can see where it’s going, can’t you?’
She then continued: ‘Where does moderation come into this… these days people are eating less meat, why can’t people be happy with that? Why have we got to make extra space in our cupboards?’
Audiences at home, though divided, had a lot to say about the segment.
One kicked off that the debate was even up for discussion, and vented: ‘What an absolutely ridiculous topic on #LooseWomen. No vegans have asked for this, just another opportunity to slag them off and cause more uproar.’
Another, however, agreed with Janet and simply wrote: ‘ Love Janet – tells it like it is!’
Janet’s comments come after she branded Andrea a ‘slut’ in a bizarre moment on Tuesday’s show.
The panel was having a debate about noisy eaters when things got heated, with the opinionated journalist fuming: ‘It’s so common to eat at the cinema and at the theatre.’
Andrea then joked: ‘That’s the nicest thing you’ve ever said to me.’
‘You’re a slut, Andrea,’ Janet hit back, as the audience gasped audibly.
Never a dull moment on daytime television, folks.
Loose Women airs weekdays from 12.30pm on ITV.
