I had to be shackled to my plane seat to get lifesaving treatment in America for drug abuse, says Danniella Westbrook

DANNIELLA Westbrook has opened up about the shocking moment she was shackled to her plane seat to get lifesaving treatment for drug abuse.

The actress, 48, said she was travelling the US when the incident took place.

Danniella praised entrepreneur and founder of Virgin Group Richard Branson for helping her travel to Arizona, where she received treatment.

"The worst thing I've done and throwing my life away was hating myself. The years I've wasted not liking the person I am," Danniella said on The Frost Report podcast.

"I was clean for a long time, I was a crack cocaine addict before my daughter was born, the year before that.

"I ended up with three weeks to live, no one would fly me anywhere in the world. Richard Branson the only person that fly me, they had to shackle me to the seat at Virgin Atlantic."

She continued: "They were going to turn me around and fly me back and I had to stay in Arizona, while I was there I got a phone call saying my son's been taken by social services but they didn't want to take him before but they've been taken.

"Everybody wanted me to come back and use."

Danniella's revelation comes after she was rushed to hospital with the bloodstream infection Septicaemia.

The former EastEnders star, long remembered for her performances as Sam Mitchell in the BBC One soap, suffered a "sudden health shock".

The condition, which could have been life-threatening, saw her bedridden for several days.

A rep for the star told The Sun she is now back home, explaining: "Danniella suffered a sudden health shock.

"Thankfully the issue was caught early and dealt with by medical professionals. Danniella has been released from hospital and is home recovering with the support of close family.

"We are grateful that Danniella hasn’t suffered from any major risks.

"Danniella appreciates everyone’s immediate support and we will be sure to issue updates on her ongoing recovery accordingly."

The actress had been suffering from septicaemia and received urgent treatment to stop the spread of any infection.

Also known as sepsis or blood-poisoning, it is a potentially life-threatening condition triggered by an infection or injury.

The NHS warns that without quick treatment, sepsis can lead to multiple organ failure and death.

Danniella, a huge star thanks to her profile on EastEnders on and off between 1990 until 2016, had taken a step back from the spotlight.

However, she has started being seen at events, photographed recently appearing the Celeb MMA party at Lit London.

The star is currently undergoing operations to get her rib implanted in her face after drugs left her with crumbling bones and a collapsed jaw and cheekbone.
