This Morning hosts Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby were back to present the ITV show on Tuesday and at the beginning of the programme, the duo spoke with Strictly Come Dancing winners Giovanni Pernice and Rose Ayling-Ellis about making show history and their victory. However, Holly sparked uproar when she made a comment about hearing to Rose, who is deaf.
The pair wowed Strictly fans with their silent dance routine, which raised awareness of the deaf community and the struggles Rose faces day-to-day.
However, just minutes into the interview, viewers were left outraged after Holly made a comment to Rose about, “hearing a pin drop”.
Phillip began the interview by asking the pair whether they will be performing their iconic routine on the Strictly tour.
“Of course,” Rose explained. “We said it would be weird for us not to do it.”
“It was such a special moment that is one we have to do again and again,” Giovanni chipped in.
“It is such an important dance, it is such a statement so to do it in an arena with 10,000 people live will be quite spectacular.
“It is one of the most beautiful things I have done on Strictly, so I think we both want to do it so much.”
“I hope no one eats crisps while we’re silent,” Rose joked.
Holly replied: “Listen, you won’t be able to hear a pin drop in the arena at that moment.
“It was a bit of magic on TV actually.”
After playing a clip of messages from fans, Holly sparked further outrage after she said: “How does that feel hearing that?”
Taking to social media to air their frustration, Matty raged: “Of course, she can’t hear a pin drop @hollywills.”
User Shrimpsy said: “Stupid comment holly, you won’t hear a pin drop.”
While Wilson added: “Well that was awkward Holly, telling Rose she won’t be able to hear a pin drop in the audience.”
“Holly really said that,” Chantal said as Robert tweeted: “Holly is making a right balls of this interview.”
Jules raged: “I can’t believe Holly just told Rose ‘you won’t hear a pin drop’, how insensitive.”
Angie went on to point out: “The saying is you CAN hear a pin drop so doubly awkward Holly said you won’t be able to hear a pin drop…” (sic)
Viewers also expressed their disappointment over the cameramen not showing Rose signing her responses.
Suz penned: “Please show rose’ hands so that deaf people can see what she is saying!”
Sharon added: “Cameraman needs to be showing rose signing.”
This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV.
