Meta mockumentary musical High School Musical: The Musical: The Series is coming back to Disney+ for season two. The show, which first aired on the streaming platform in November 2019, is returning after almost two years since viewers first fell in love with the story. The official show Instagram account gave its audience an answer for when season two will hit the Disney+ streaming platform.
‘High School Musical: The Musical: The Series’ season one aired in 2019
High School Musical: The Musical: The Series is a continuation of the HSM universe. The first Disney Channel Original Movie aired on the network in 2006. It featured a sequel on the network and a theatrical release for the third film.
The newest TV show takes place years after High School Musical aired on the kids’ television network. In HSMTMTS, students attend the high school in which HSM filmed.
In High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, Nini Salazar-Roberts (Olivia Rodrigo), Ricky Bowen (Joshua Bassett), and other students audition to put on a school production of High School Musical.
The show became a massive hit and the creator talked about season 2
The TV show impressed longtime HSM fans and critics. It has a 79 percent average audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Furthermore, Rodrigo’s song from the show, “All I Want,” landed on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in January 2020. It is now currently on the Global 200 chart, per Billboard, after “drivers license” success.
Show executive producer Tim Federle spoke about season two in an interview with PopSugar. The show already confirmed that the season two musical would not be High School Musical 2. Federle addressed the fans’ concern that the spinoff would get stuck to the original franchise.
“To expand my show and not keep it stuck sort of flexing its own muscles and being so self-referential to the originals, one of the things I look forward to doing is expanding the world of the musical,” he said.
“I love those original High School Musical songs, I love our covers, but audiences know the real thing when they hear it,” he continued. “And Olivia and this cast is the real thing. And that’s why my responsibility as a storyteller today is not to pat myself on the back and look to the past, but rather to look at my cast and say, you are the future. Let’s sing these songs together.”
‘High School Musical: The Musical: The Series’ season 2 airs on this date
