Has Norris Cole left Coronation Street for good?

Quintessential Coronation Street character Norris Cole (Malcolm Hebden) is set to leave the soap once again, after a short-lived return.

After an initial absence of a year and a half, Norris is due to leave Corrie once again, with his first departure from Weatherfield being down to his wanting to visit Emily Bishop (Eileen Derbyshire), and his second being down to the happy news that he’ll be getting married to Freda (Ali Briggs) in Edinburgh.

While this is great news for Norris, it isn’t quite good so for soap fans, with Norris being, as show boss Iain MacLeod described at a press event, one of those ‘characters who are so Corrie that the show doesn’t feel correct without them’.

So as we ready ourselves to say goodbye to Norris once again, we’re already asking ourselves: Will Norris be returning to Corrie?

Has Norris Cole left Coronation Street forever?

Thankfully, while there’s no word as to when Norris might return to Coronation Street, we do know that the show bosses are leaving the role open, with a view to seeing Norris return to Weatherfield permanently in future.

Norris Cole, who has been appearing on Corrie since 1994, first took his leave of Coronation Street off-screen in 2018.

While this first exit was put down to Norris wanting to visit Emily, the reason behind the scenes was that actor Malcolm Hebden had suffered a heart attack, and was taking time off from work to recover.

Malcolm told the Blackpool Gazette: ‘Most of December I was in an induced coma, in the care of these brilliant, wonderful people at the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU). Fortunately I didn’t realise how bad it was; I was dying. The cardiac team, headed by Mr Joseph Zacharias, simply saved my life.

‘I was informed by my doctor I had had at least one heart attack. I was sent to hospital, by emergency ambulance to Blackburn hospital and was there one night. While there I collapsed and was brought here to Blackpool Victoria – where I was operated on, in a procedure which was described by my surgeon Mr Zacharias as groundbreaking.

‘The heart attack tore a hole in my heart, they operated and took a chance.’

Thankfully, Malcolm eventually became well enough to return to Coronation Street, but just on a temporary basis for now.

As to why Norris might return to Weatherfield, we can only speculate – Will his marriage to Freda last, or will his homecoming be down to marital disaster?

Only time will tell…
