Grumpy Adrian Chiles didn’t crack a smile when signing up for Strictly special

Grumpy-faced TV presenter Adrian Chiles struggled to raise a smile when he signed up for the Christmas Day Strictly Come Dancing show.

He told BBC bosses he would not have a spray tan which the celebrities usually have to so they don’t look pale and pasty on the dancefloor.

The star admitted: “I’ve been asked twice if I want a fake tan and twice I’ve refused.

“My outfit isn’t really glittery and it's very comfortable, I might take it home with me.

“I got these new dancing shoes and they’re almost completely knackered already, in only 10 days!"

His mood didn’t change when his family begged him not to do the show as they feared he would be terrible.

He added: “They were absolutely, to a man and woman, horrified! Even though my mum’s a massive fan of the show she said, 'Oh God!'

“After one day of training I was like a drowning man clinging on to a bit of driftwood.”

And even his dance partner Jowita Przystal realised she might have to take extra steps to stop him looking so grumpy all the time.

She said: “I think I would buy him a face mask with a smile on it as it might encourage him to smile more.”

After a short dance course for the festive special, Adrian admits he got more into the swing of things.

He added: “I wouldn’t have missed it, it’s been a real privilege, and I’m not just saying that.

“In the new year, I’m really going to try and take half a pint of what Jowita’s been drinking (metaphorically speaking) and try and be more positive and enjoy things more”

Adrian will be taking to the dance floor along with fellow celebrities Fred Sirieix, Mel Giedroyc, Moira Stuart, Jay Blades and Anne-Marie.

The Strictly Come Dancing Christmas Special airs on Christmas Day on BBC One at 5:10pm.
