Gogglebox star celebrates birthday after quitting show following death of pal

Gogglebox legend Marina Wingrove is celebrating her 88th birthday in style this week as co-stars pay gushing tribute to her a year after she quit the hit show.

A social media fan page dedicated to the series delighted fans with a glam snap of the Channel 4 favourtie, where she can been seen sipping on a glass of bubbly from a pink flute with a grin on her face.

The fan page wrote: "Happy 88th Birthday Marina! Hope you have a great day!"

Former and current show stars took to the comment section to wish her a very happy birthday.

"Happy birthday lovely hope you had a great day love dave and shirley xxx," welshman David Griffiths wrote.

While hairdresser Stephen Webb added: " Beautiful Marina happy birthday."

His partner Daniel Lustig-Webb wrote: "Happy birthday marina."

Mica Ven, who recently announced she was quitting the series alongside her partner Marcus, also joined in the love by posting a love heart emoji.

The beloved show favourite saddened fans when she quit the series following the death of her co-star Mary Cook last year, who passed away at the age of 92.

In a statement released by Channel 4 at the time, they said: "We are extremely saddened to share that Gogglebox star Mary Cook passed away in hospital this weekend at the age of 92 with her family by her side.

"Beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and dear friend to many, Mary, who worked in the hospitality trade, had been married and widowed twice."

In the wake of Mary's death, Marina was among those to pay tribute.

The message – shared by Gogglebox on Twitter – reads: “My dearest friend Mary, treasured memories will last forever. Our laughs and giggles and our ups and downs will forever be in my heart. Deepest sympathies to Mary’s family. Love Marina”.

In an interview with The St Monica Trust, Mary and Marina revealed they were discovered by producers while on their way to do some shopping. Marina said: "I went across to catch the bus down to Asda and this young girl comes up to me and says 'do you ever watch Gogglebox?' I said, 'well I have done' and she said 'do you want to be on it?' I thought, 'I’m game for a laugh, like'.

“Then she said 'have you got a friend?' And like that, Mary came round the corner on her scooter.”
