Kate Garraway has released her documentary Caring For Derek, and tributes are pouring in for the presenter’s latest insight into her husband’s battle with the aftermath of Covid-19.
Derek contracted Covid in 2020 and has been left with a host of health problems, having spent a year in hospital before returning to the family home in April 2021.
Kate created a documentary, Finding Derek, last year, which gave viewers a glimpse into his ongoing health battles, and received widespread critical acclaim for the film.
Now the Good Morning Britain presenter has appeared in a follow-up programme Caring For Derek, which follows her husband and family as Derek receives round-the-clock care in his ongoing recovery.
In one emotional scene, the couple’s two children, Darcey, 15, and Billy, 12, are seen throwing their arms around their dad as he is wheeled through the front door, arriving home after more than a year in hospital.
The documentary also covers the family’s first festive season at home together since before Derek’s illness in 2019, which Kate recently described as “the biggest gift”.
Celebrities and fans alike have been praising the latest insight into Derek’s ongoing health battle on social media as they watched the emotional ITV show.
Emmerdale actress Lisa Riley shared an emotional message to Twitter, writing: “Wow @kategarraway @itv YOU…….your family, strength beyond strength. #CaringForDerek you see the smallest changes, these keep you going. Homes Under The Hammer presenter Lucy Alexander wrote: “So much of this moved me having dealt with trauma in my own family. Counting on mates like @benshephard popping in for a cuppa are invaluable. @kategarraway you got this. Love to you all. Thank you for sharing.”
Actress Samantha Giles added: "I’ve never wished for a miracle for anyone more than @kategarraway and her family #CaringForDerek . Such amazing courage from all of them xxx"
Meanwhile, a fan added: “I'm a carer and I know how hard it is.This shows you exactly what it is like. I can get away from it for hours when I go home. Kate is doing a fantastic job”.
Prior to the programme's release, Kate revealed details about the upcoming documentary on Instagram, where she explained how she had "thought long and hard about letting cameras in our lives again", but wanted to "shine a light" on issues that affect others.
The GMB presenter said: “#Tonight on @itv at 9pm #CaringforDerek airs. I thought long and hard about letting cameras into our lives again because as with the 1st one #FindingDerek I wanted it to offer more than just sharing what my family has been through.
“I wanted it to also shine a light on issues that I know effect all of you. I pray it gives hope to everyone who is battling on with whatever life has thrown at you. The heroes of this documentary are the carers , doctors & nurses who are giving Derek the chance to even try to recover.”
“I salute the carers everywhere who fight on for their loved ones. Do let me know what you think,” she added.
Caring for Derek is available now on ITV Hub.
