Coronation Street’s Craig Charles admits ‘the pay isn’t amazing’ on soaps

Former Corrie star Craig Charles has revealed how the money you get for appearing on a British soap isn't all it's cracked up to be.

The 57-year-old actor and DJ played cabbie Lloyd in the ITV show for 10 years until 2015.

Speaking to the Metro, Craig said: "They make it really difficult for you to leave Coronation Street. It was a great job. The pay isn’t amazing but it’s better than digging ditches in the cold.

Coronation Street: Anthony Cotton teases 'big storyline' in future

Despite spending the last 18 years on the soap, Antony Cotton said he is still having the time of his life.

He said: “Corrie is like a giant family. It feels nice to go to work with people that you know and love. I’ve known a lot of them for the past 18 years. I adore people there like they’re my own family. For the past 19 years, I’ve never wanted to say goodbye to that.”

Corrie bosses have been forced to scrap a string of storylines due to coronavirus. But now restrictions for TV shows have eased, there are plans to finally get them done.

Antony concluded: “There are stories that we tried to do, but in the end, we couldn’t because of the pandemic. So now they will happen over the next year.

“I have a very big, dramatic storyline that I am hoping we can now pick up and do properly. We are getting back into the swing of things now, so I am looking forward to the next year.

“I am hoping 12 months from now things will be completely back to normal.”

    Explained: Where is Emmerdale filmed?

When Emmerdale first catapulted onto our screens back in 1972, it was filmed in the village of Arncliffe in North Yorkshire.

In 1975, the fictional village moved to West Yorkshire in order to cut production costs and was filmed in another real-life village, Esholt in Shipley.

The exterior scenes of the soap were filmed at Esholt for 22 years but by 1998 local residents had grown tired of the production crew’s presence and the tourists the soap was attracting.

ITV then set up a replica of Esholt on the outskirts of Leeds for external filming.

Interior scenes are shot at ITV’s studio in the city.

Soap stars to be BANNED from flogging diet pills

ITV have banned anything that could bring the company into disrepute, including cosmetic surgery and diet products and “adult entertainment.”

The move allows cast members to post paid advertisements, with the producers’ blessing, in a bid to prevent cast members from quitting the shows because they make more money online.

A TV insider said: “Stars like former Corrie actor Helen Flanagan are inundated with opportunities to promote products on platform including Instagram.

“And earnings can often dwarf any salary actors get paid on the soaps, meaning it can be more lucrative to  leave the shows to effectively sell goods.

“This is simply a smart way to ensure they can still advertise products while remaining on the shows .

“But they spell out in black and white what’s deemed unacceptable – as previously it’s been a grey area.”

      Sarah has loads of support

The Sun revealed that the Mandy Richardson actress, 40, was dismissed from her £120k a year role after refusing to quit stripping on the X-rated OnlyFans website.

Sarah has been stripping off online for several weeks and has received several warnings off bosses over her conduct because of the show’s young audience. The star refused to stop and has now now been asked to stand down from her role, that she first took on in 1996.

But fans of the Channel 4 soap are fuming considering scenes on the show are just as racy as what can get posted on the controversial 18+ network.

One wrote on Twitter: “Hollyoaks have hardly done youth friendly content outside watershed. Examples, the word b***h has been used in a derogatory term several times, there is literally a storyline with cameras in peris bedroom.”

Another said: “@lgbthizzie @Hollyoaks they’re hypocritical! they’ve had multiple nude scenes with MEN, but as long as it’s a man it’s fine???? there’s some misogynistic behaviour happening with the bosses at lime .. someone needs their job role re-evaluate.”
