EastEnders’ Charlie Brooks heads to the gym ahead of Janine Butcher’s return to the Square

EASTENDERS' Charlie Brooks was spotted heading to the gym ahead of Janine Butcher's return to Albert Square.

Earlier this week, The Sun exclusively revealed that the 39-year-old star is set to make an explosive comeback as the Walford villain.

And it appears that the actress is making sure she's in tip-top shape for the occasion, hitting her local fitness centre for a work out.

The TV favourite had her short blonde hair loose, and wore a pair of sunglasses over her make-up free face.

Charlie wore a bold pair of patterned gym leggings, and covered up her top half in a grey jumper.

She completed the casual look with a silver necklace, and black trainers – clutching onto a gym holdall as she made her way.

Charlie is returning to the BBC One soap as part of a "huge story" later this year – more than seven years after her last stint as murderer Janine.

She'll be a full-time cast member, and EastEnders fans have already speculated that she could be the one to take down evil Gray Atkins.

Charlie took on the role of Janine in 1999, with the character the troubled daughter of soap icon Frank Butcher – stepdaughter to Pat, and sister of Ricky.

An EastEnders source told The Sun: “Bosses have a huge story planned for Charlie’s return.

“They are keeping tight-lipped about whether Janine will come back as a reformed character after all the chaos she has caused in the past.

“But she certainly has a lot of history in Albert Square so whether she will be welcomed back with open arms or not remains to be seen.

“One thing the viewers can be sure about is that it is bound to be explosive. Wherever Janine goes, drama is never far behind.”

Janine left Albert Square in 2014 after killing her fourth husband Michael Moon, travelling to France to be reunited with their daughter Scarlett.

She was found not guilty of Michael's murder in court – but shunned by locals.

Our insider added: "The potential for Janine is huge. She has enemies all around the Square who she’d gladly go to war with, and she’s shown before she isn’t afraid to kill to get her way.

“It could have huge repercussions for some of the big names in EastEnders.

"She’s not going to come back and play nice.”
