Research scientist Rahul took part in series nine of the hit Channel 4 baking show, and he managed to impress Paul Hollywood enough to become the winner of the series. Although he seemed to be enjoying himself on the show, the 34-year-old admitted to Steph McGovern he couldn’t watch the following series due to “bad memories”.

Appearing on Channel 4’s Steph’s Packed Lunch, the Bake Off star was asked: “What are you thinking watching it at the minute then?”

He replied: “Well, I am enjoying it quite a lot now.

“I mean, I didn’t quite enjoy it in 2019 because it brings all the memories back, the good and the bad.”

As the others laughed, Rahul explained: “You know, like for everybody.

“I can, yes,” the scientist answered, “I can totally as a viewer, and i kind of sympathise what they go through.

“And also in a very weird way I kind of feel like – Jürgen is probably like double my age – and I feel like they’re my kids.”

“Aw, you get protective over them?” Steph asked.

“Yeah,” he stated, adding: “I feel like I have to protect them and you can’t choose your favourite child, so.”

Fans of Bake Off will remember Rahul as a firm favourite of the series.

The sweet-natured baker often blended cuisines together to create unique flavours.

After his win, he commented: “Winning Bake Off is about the coolest thing that I have done in my life, and I hope it will help me gather some more confidence.

“I hope it helps me try new things and be a bit more adventurous in baking and life itself.”

Since his success in the show, Rahul has gone on to star in cooking segments on This Morning.

In 2018, he accidentally ended up covering presenter Ruth Langsford in flour while he was whisking.

The baker also has a monthly food column in The Times, where he updates readers on his latest delicious recipes.

In the final alongside Rahul in 2018 was Ruby Bhogal and Kim-Joy Hewlett.

The Great British Bake Off returns on Tuesday at 8pm on Channel 4, While Steph’s Packed Lunch airs weekdays at 12pm on Channel 4.
