Corrie star goes to bed early to save on energy bills amid cost of living crisis

Coronation Street star Daniel Brocklebank has confessed to going to bed early in order to save energy amid the cost of living crisis.

The 42-year-old, who is known to fans for playing the role of Billy Mayhew in the long-running ITV soap, told fans that he avoids turning on the lights due to his increasing energy bills.

Taking to Twitter, Daniel asked his followers whether they were also feeling the pinch.

He said: "Anyone else find themselves going to bed early just so they don’t have to turn the lights on? I feel like I did when I was 8 & could still hear the bigger kids playing outside.. #energycrisis."

The Corrie star received an array of messages from fans as they agreed to also finding things rather difficult at the moment.

One follower replied: "I sit in the dark every evening. Only watch my soaps. My cooker is broken so only have air fryer to cook with.

"I turn everything off standby. And not used heating for 5 years. I'm putting on £200 a month on electric just to barely exist. How is that right."

Another admitted: "I went to bed at about 7pm, have been asleep for quite a while, woke and used the Chrome notebook for a short while. will go back to sleep in a mo. I am a pensioner reliant on state pension, which is not nearly enough."

Meanwhile a third said: "We are spending most evening under candle light – it's actually quite nice and also has the handy by product of warming the room up."

On Thursday (May 26), Chancellor Rishi Sunak announced measures to tackle the impact of soaring inflation, which has reached a 40-year high.

He also claimed that every household will receive a £400 energy bill discount which will come under an emergency cost-of-living package that is partly funded by a £5 billion windfall tax on the oil and gas giants.

Rishi also unveiled targeted support for the poorest families, the elderly and also the disabled in the package that will be two-thirds funded by borrowing.
