Charles Hanson has been on Bargain Hunt for almost two decades, giving fans an insight into the history of treasured items as well as their value. The BBC One star has long been a fan-favourite and now also regularly appears on Antiques Road Trip as well. Here’s everything you need to know about the antique expert Charles Hanson.

Prior to his TV career which started in 2002, Charles worked as chartered surveyor.

Since then, he has become one of the faces most seen on Bargain Hunt, Antiques Road Trip and Flog It!.

He also helped fellow auctioneer Izzie Balmer in the early days of her appearing on television.

Charles used to be Izzie’s employer and when he couldn’t make it on Bargain Hunt one day, he put her name forward.

Izzie explained: “I suddenly got a phone call from Charles – five minutes before the auction was due to start at 10am.
“He was en route to Birmingham and wanted to offer me a few pearls of wisdom to help things go well.
“It was his way of telling me I was going on TV.
“There were no other auctioneers available – it had to be me. I had to auction the Bargain Hunt lots in front of the cameras.”

Charles was born on May 1, 1978 which means that he is now 43-years-old.

So he would have been just 24 when he first started working on Bargain Hunt, just a few years younger than Izzie when she began appearing on the show.

In terms of his personal life, Charles is married to former radiographer Rebecca Ludlam who he tied the knot within 2010.

Together, they have daughter Matilda who was born in 2014 and five-year-old son Frederick.

Sadly in 2012, the couple suffered the loss of their son Tommy who was stillborn.

Recalling the moment where they could no longer hear their baby’s heartbeat, Charles told Staffordshire Live: “I can remember driving to the hospital in tears.

“We were so worried, but I suppose we still hoped that the baby would be all right.

“Unfortunately, our worst fears were confirmed and we stayed at the hospital for the next three days.

“It was the hardest thing in the world to cope with. But the team at the hospital were very kind to us. I sat and held Tommy for a long time. We said our goodbyes.”

Charles and Rebecca lost their son just weeks after finding out he was diagnosed with testicular cancer.

He only missed one series of filming Bargain Hunt as he started chemotherapy.

Charles is now fully recovered and remains a star of the BBC series.

Bargain Hunt is available to watch on weekdays on BBC One.
