Over 330,000 people tuned in on Wednesday night to watch a special Fair City episode dedicated to domestic violence.
Explosive scenes saw fan- favourite Cristiano San Martin beaten by his lover, Will Casey.
Cristiano, Will, and a therapist were the only characters that appeared in the sensitive episode, which was viewed by 337,000 people.
A warning about the violence and bad language due to feature in the soap was shown in advance of the 8pm showing.
However, the heartbreaking scenes were not the last viewers will see as tensions between Will and Cristiano will continue to rise over the next week.
On Sunday, another dark turn is expected after Cristiano pleads with Will to return to the therapist.
He then asks after rival Damien, which causes Will to see red. As tensions begin to rise, Cristiano is forced to lock himself in the bathroom in a bid to seek safety from Will’s violent ways. Will injures himself by trying to get Cristiano to open the door.
He puts Cristiano on a guilt-trip by playing up his injury. Will later uses the injury to draw sympathy from Mairead during the week after telling Cristiano to downplay his.
Rodrigo Ternevoy, who plays Cristiano, said: “It’s a very strong yet dark storyline and I really hope it will bring light to the issue of domestic abuse so that people going through similar can reach out for help.
“Tackling domestic abuse with same-sex partners will hopefully open up the topic for discussion.”
Elsewhere, Katy’s grandmother, Rose gets a shock when she finds Ciaran, who has not been seen in Carrigstown since being stabbed and falling from a pier over two years ago during the dramatic “Katy in a box” storyline, in the house.
He lies to a confused Rose, and tells her he’s Michael, Katy’s older brother that passed away three years ago after suffering a brain haemorrhage. He takes Rose’s door key before he flees.
Bosco is in complete disbelief when Rose tells him she saw Michael, who he believes is dead.
When Katy hears Rose talk about seeing Michael, she becomes worried.
Amilia Stewart, who plays Katy, said previously Ciaran’s return was going to be a big shock to her.
“It’s going to be a big shock when she sees him again,” said Amelia. “It’s like seeing a ghost. She can’t believe he’s still alive when everyone thought he was dead. It’s really scary for her. Their relationship did become very unhealthy.”
