Kurt Cobain started Nirvana in 1987, along with bass player Krist Novoselic. Three years later, in 1990, they finally recruited their permanent drummer, Dave Grohl. Their time together was short, as only a few years later, Kurt died.

How old was Kurt Cobain when he died?

Kurt Cobain died on April 5, 1994, and was found three days later by an electrician.

Similarly to many famous stars like Amy Winehouse and Brian Jones, Kurt was 27-years-old when he died, which has made him part of the 27 Club.

Before his death, Kurt had been performing in different bands, until in 1987 he convinced his friend Krist Novoselic to join him in a new venture.

For a few years, while they wrote music and rehearsed, they struggled to find a drummer to join them, until in 1990 they recruited Dave Grohl, who later went on to become the lead singer of Foo Fighters.

Before Dave’s appointment, when Chad Channing was their drummer, they released their first album, Bleach, in 1989.

After this, Dave became the full-time drummer, and they released their iconic album Nevermind in 1991.

This album saw grunge, which had been a subcultural movement in the 1990s, come to the mainstream with songs like Smells Like Teen Spirit.

While their mainstream success was great for the musical genre, Kurt struggled with touring and how to maintain his underground music roots with worldwide fame.

Kurt was also a main songwriter for the band and wrote many melancholy lyrics which typified the grunge movement.

However, Kurt also struggled with mental health problems, as well as an addiction to heroin.

On March 4, 1994, Kurt was found having overdosed on champagne and drugs, which his wife Courtney Love said was his first suicide attempt.

On April 8 of the same year, Kurt was found dead with heroin in his body, holding a gun.

He had taken his own life, as was made clear by a note which was written and left by his body.

It was later discovered he had died three days before on April 5.

Red Hot Chilli Peppers’ Anthony Kiedis spoke out about it in his autobiography about Kurt’s death, given the two were friends and worked in the music industry at similar times.

Anthony said: “The news [of Cobain’s death] sucked the air out of the entire house…

“It was an emotional blow, and we all felt it. I don’t know why everyone on earth felt so close to that guy; he was beloved and endearing and inoffensive in some weird way.

“For all of his screaming and all of his darkness, he was just lovable.”

Dave has also spoken about Kurt’s death, telling Kerrang in February 2021: “Of course, it was an incredibly challenging experience and ultimately one of the greatest heartbreaks of my life that Nirvana isn’t still here today making music. Whether it would be called Nirvana or something else.

“It is one of my life’s greatest heartbreaks that Kurt isn’t still here to write more amazing songs because it’s pretty clear that he was blessed with a gift.

“I think it’s safe to say that he was the greatest songwriter of our generation.

“I’m very proud to say that I got to be his drummer and play those songs every night.”

Dave also said, despite being a rock singer in his own right, he would never sing any Nirvana songs on stage.

Kurt left behind his wife, Courtney Love, and daughter, Frances Bean.
