Disney have confirmed that production on the long awaited sequel Hocus Pocus 2 has begun with the "extraordinarily talented" Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy returning as the Sanderson Sisters.

Filming is underway in Rhode Island, New York, for the sequel to the 1993 film which will air on Disney+ in Autumn 2022.

Talking about the film, Director Anne Fletcher said, "I am beyond thrilled to be involved in the sequel to a film that is as beloved as Hocus Pocus."

"Fans around the world have embraced these characters and have made this film a Halloween tradition whose popularity continues to grow, and how lucky am I to be back at Disney with these three extraordinarily talented ladies in the iconic roles they created, as well as our fabulous new additions to the cast?"

Joining the cast are Gossip Girl's Whitney Peak, Crown Lake's Lilia Buckingham and American Horror Stories' Belissa Escobedo as Becca, Cassie and Izzy, three high school students living in Salem.

However, the Sanderson Sisters return and are out for revenge 29 years after first being brought back by Max Dennison in the original 1993 film.

It is then up to the three students to stop the Sanderson Sisters from wreaking a new kind of havoc on Salem before midnight on Halloween, after they incite the wrath of the witches.

While not much is known about the film, it has been confirmed that along with new cast members Hannah Waddingham, Tony Hale, Sam Richardson, Juju Brener, Froy Gutierrez, Taylor Page Henderson and Nina Kitchen, another familiar face will be returning to the cast.

Doug Jones, who played fan favourite character Billy Butcherson, has also been confirmed to reprise his role in the sequel.

However, no further details have been revealed about whether other original cast members, including Omri Katz, Thora Birch and Vanessa Shaw will be returning.

However, actor Omri Katz has previously said he would be open to returning to the role if asked.

The original Hocus Pocus film, which has become a Halloween favourite since its release in 1993, starred Omri Katz as Max Dennison, a teenager who lights the Black Flame Candle and brings the Sanderson Sisters back to life.

Along with little sister Dannii (Thora Birch), love interest Alison (Vanessa Shaw) and new friend Binx the cat, they have to stop the witches and protect the children of Salem before it is too late.
