Darth Vader actor David Prowse’s family say goodbye in Star Wars-themed funeral

Star Wars actor David Prowse's funeral paid homage to his most famous role as Darth Vader.

Mourners gathered on Monday after the film star died back in November at the age of 85 following a short illness, his agent confirmed at the time.

Prowse was most famous for playing the iconic character and villain Darth Vader in the first three Star Wars films.

These were – Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.

Following his funeral, Prowse's daughter Rachel Prowse took to her personal Instagram account hours later to share some photos from the funeral and posted a touching tribute.

Rachel shared snaps of flowers which included a ton of black roses arranged to look like Darth Vader's famous mask.

There was also a number of other floral arrangements which included 'dad' spelt out in white roses with Parma Violets sweets placed on top and the Green Cross Code symbol, a reference to David starring as the Green Cross Code Man in an advert in the seventies.

His daughter also shared a screenshot of the poem which was read out at the funeral – His Journey's Just Begun by Ellen Brenneman.

  • Celebs such as Kanye West who have bravely spoken about living with bipolar disorder

  • Murder, curses and surgery complications – All the Harry Potter cast who have died

Rachel captioned the set of photos: "So today we said goodbye to dad. It was a very small gathering of family and close friends.

"Covid restrictions meant there was no wake but we hope to celebrate his life later next year if and when some semblance of 'normality' has returned.

"There is so much to say but the fact that we love you dad and we miss you will suffice."

She finished the post with the hashtags #dad #daveprowse #darthvader #greencrosscodeman and a red love heart emoji.

Last month, David's agent Thomas Bowington confirmed the sad news of his death.

He wrote: "May the force be with him, always!

"Though famous for playing many monsters – for myself, and all who knew Dave and worked with him, he was a hero in our lives."

He described the star's death as "a truly and deeply heart-wrenching loss for us and millions of fans all over the world".
