Top Gun is back, with some of the original cast returning as well as a new band of recruits. This time, Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell is forced to confront the past while training a new squad of graduates for a dangerous mission. With Tom Cruise in the lead role once again, the film is certain to get fans hearts beating a little faster as the release date approaches.

When is Top Gun: Maverick released in cinemas?

Top Gun: Maverick is released on July 2, 2021, in cinemas.

Like many other films, Top Gun: Maverick has been delayed three times due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Having said that, some of the delays predated the COVID-19 pandemic, as the film was delayed from July 12, 2019, to June 26, 2020.

It was then moved up by two days to June 24 before being delayed again to December 23.

The film was delayed another time to July 2, 2021, which was also reported as being due to scheduling conflicts with Tom, who was filming the latest Mission Impossible film late last year.

For viewers in the USA, the film will also be available to view on Paramount Pictures’ own streaming platform, Paramount Plus.

The streaming release date is 45 days later than the cinematic one, which is August 16.

At present, Paramount+ is not available in the UK, therefore further details on UK streaming will be updated when available.

Who is in the cast of Top Gun: Maverick?

There are some returning characters in the sequel, including Tom Cruise as Maverick.

Val Kilmer also returns as Iceman, Maverick’s rival.

Maverick’s best mate in the first film was Goose (played by Anthony Edwards), however many will remember he died at the end of the first movie.

Miles Teller joins the cast as Rooster, a pilot trainee and the son of Goose, meaning his name is carried on.

Jennifer Connolly replaces Kelly McGillis as Maverick’s love interest, and Jean Louisa Kelly replaces Meg Ryan as Carole Bradshaw, Goose’s widow.

Jon Hamm joins the cast as Vice Admiral Cyclone, and some of the pilot trainees are played by Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman, Monica Barbaro and other supporting stars.

The death of Top Gun director Tony Scott means Joseph Kosinski is in the director’s chair.

What is the plot of Top Gun: Maverick?

Little has been shared thus far about the plot of Top Gun: Maverick.

One thing which is clear is that Maverick is now top of his game in the piloting world, and is training new recruits.

However, a blast from the past causes him to have to confront some difficult issues, as the team prepares for a dangerous mission which may require some big sacrifice.

The trailer shows Maverick in some pretty death-defying stunts, all of which were likely to have been performed by Tom Cruise himself.
