Tracy Morgan and Megan Wollover’s love story began rather unexpectedly. The pair were set up by a mutual friend in 2011, shortly after each of them had gone through their own respective breakups. However, Wollover had no idea she was about to meet the 30 Rock star. “When I pulled up and saw it was him, I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, what’s going on here?'” Wollover recalled to InsideWeddings in 2015.
Of course, Wollover picked up on Morgan’s charismatic personality. “I just felt [Tracy] was very charming and sweet, such a gentleman, and that’s what caught my interest,” she added. Luckily, the actor felt the same way and had a feeling they were meant to be. “The very first thing I said to Megan when I met her was, ‘You are going to be my wife,'” he told People in 2015. “No joke, before I even said ‘Hello,’ I knew we would be married one day.” Fast forward a few months, and Morgan popped the question to Wollover during a trip to San Francisco.
But in 2014, the couple endured a terrible tragedy: Morgan was in a car accident, which killed his friend, James McNair, per People. Luckily, Morgan — who shares daughter Maven Sonae with Wollover — recovered, and the two got married in August 2015. Unfortunately, the pair revealed in July 2020 that they were going their separate ways after nearly five years of marriage. So, what went wrong? We get to the bottom of it below.
Tracy Morgan called the split 'a challenging time'
On July 29, 2020, Tracy Morgan announced that he and his wife, Megan Wollover, were calling it quits. “Sadly, after nearly five years of marriage, Megan and I are filing for divorce,” Morgan told People in a statement, which was released through his spokesperson. “This is a challenging time for all involved, so I ask that you please respect our privacy.”
While Morgan didn’t elaborate on what exactly went wrong, the split comes as a surprise since the New York native couldn’t help but gush over quarantining with Wollover and their daughter, Maven Sonae, amid the coronavirus pandemic in May 2020. (Morgan was married to Sabina Morgan for 23 years, and they share three sons: Gitrid, Malcolm, and Tracy Jr., per Heavy.) “We’re taking this time to get closer — loving more and being patient with each other,” Morgan told People at the time. “My life is always so busy, so now I get time to just be with my family.”
Tracy Morgan and Megan Wollover have been through tragedy
Tracy Morgan is known for his jokes and antics, but in 2014, he had a less than funny experience after a Walmart truck slammed into his limousine on the New Jersey Turnpike, per People. Morgan’s friend James McNair didn’t survive the crash, and according to Essence, the actor was in a coma for over a week. “The reality is that when I got the call, I didn’t really realize how bad everything was,” Megan Wollover told the outlet in 2016.
Luckily, Morgan survived, but he was in a wheelchair for five months following the tragic accident. Wollover — who was engaged to Morgan at the time — knew she had to be by the actor’s side. “At that point, he wasn’t my husband, but we were actually supposed to be getting married that summer,” she explained. “When you choose to share a life with somebody, God forbid something bad would happen, you want to choose the partner that’s going to ride with you through the good and the bad. We just had to keep being positive about it and strong. I was strong with my husband.”
“People grow together, but this was just big,” she added. “We really went through a life and death situation.” At the end of the day, Wollover was not going to leave Morgan’s side — no matter what. “You know, when you love someone, you stick in there,” she said. “You pray for the best and you stick through it.”
Tracy Morgan was 'eternally grateful' for his wife
Five years after Tracy Morgan’s scary accident, the actor gave a shout-out to his support system, which included his wife, Megan Wollover, his daughter, Maeve Sonae, and the rest of his family. “There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t miss my friend Jimmy Mac, who sadly lost his life that night,” Morgan wrote on Twitter in June 2019. “I love you, Jimmy. I thank GOD for my family.”
“I am eternally grateful for the love and support they give me,” he continued. “My wife, daughter, sons, and friends are what got me back on my feet. I live every day trying to do right by them and make the most of this second chance.” For her part, Wollover — who married Morgan in 2015 — reflected on that tough time period in her life. Despite the challenges, Wollover noted “[their] love is stronger for it,” she told People in 2015.
The model and The Last O.G. star certainly took their vows seriously, through sickness and health. But ultimately, their relationship didn’t work out in the long run.
