Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, a young adult novel, has been turned into a movie more than once, and another iteration of the famous story will hit theaters in the next few years. The latest flick will deal with Willy Wonka’s origin story. In the years since the original film debuted, several fan theories about the mysterious Wonka have surfaced. One Reddit theory is especially dark. According to the idea, Wonka isn’t just a business owner. He is a serial killer.
A Fan theory suggests that Willy Wonka was a serial killer
In 2017, a fan theory surfaced on Reddit that painted Willy Wonka in a different light. The fan theory suggests that Wonka wasn’t a well-meaning chocolate factory owner. Instead, they believe he was a serial killer who had lured children to his factory with promises of riches and a private tour to kill them.
The user points out that the contest winners were doomed from the start. Wonka created the entire factory to entice the kids into going against his wishes. The user argues that their disobedience and bad behavior justifies what happens to them in Wonka’s mind. In the fan theory, Wonka is akin to Dexter Morgan, only killing people he thinks have done wrong. The 2010 fake movie trailer, Gobstopper, paints a similar picture.
Willy Wonka’s golden tickets were strategically placed, argues the user
The theory takes a dark look at the contest that brought Charlie Bucket and the other contest winners to Wonka’s magical chocolate factory. According to the idea, Wonka strategically placed the tickets into the hands of the most ungrateful of children so he could destroy them, one by one.
He does just that. Augustus Gloop falls into the chocolate river and finds himself stuck in a tube. The Oompa Loompas cart Violet Beauregard off she chews gum Wonka told her not to taste. Veruca Salt falls down a bad egg shoot, and Mike Teavee meets an unfortunate fate when Wonka has him sent to the stretching room. In the twisted theory, Charlie was the last man standing. He didn’t just inherit the factory, assumes the fan, but Wonka’s twisted vision, too.
Warner Bros. has given a Willy Wonka origin film the green light
While the Willy Wonka fan theory doesn’t explain why Wonka became a serial killer, an upcoming movie will explore his origin story. According to Deadline, Timothée Chalamet will take on the role of young Wonka in the forthcoming Warner Bros. flick.
Warner Bros. produced two other films based on the famed Roald Dahl story. It was responsible for the 1971 classic Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and the 2005 remake Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The 2005 remake, directed by Tim Burton, is often criticized for its dark and creepy nature. There is no word on whether the origin flick will maintain Burton’s darker vision. Burton will not direct the upcoming movie, according to the official announcement.
