The first two trailers for Stranger Things‘ upcoming third season were pretty innocuous, and while we knew that there was going to be a new monster in town, it also seemed like the residents of Hawkins were going to have a pretty great summer, thanks in part to the addition of a new mall.
But of course, this is Stranger Things, and nothing is ever that simple. The final trailer for the third season was released last night, and we have just five words: The Mind Flayer is back.
You’re probably thinking, “But wait, I thought Eleven closed the gate to the Upside Down at the end of season two!” But it seems like the Mind Flayer either came back through the gate…or didn’t leave at all. As the monster ominously tells the kids, “You let us in, and now you are going to have to let us stay.”
The Mind Flayer needs a new host in order to stay in the human world, and the trailer seems to imply that Billy Hargrove is going to be that host. The rest of the trailer shows the kids fighting against the Mind Flayer, with Eleven leading the pack. (Expect plenty of nosebleeds.)
Fans are very excited about these new developments, and the memes are starting to roll in.
