The trailer for action sequel Rambo V: Last Blood is finally here. And considering it catches up with grizzled hero John Rambo in his retirement, it has a surprisingly modern feel. The clip, released earlier this week, plays over viral smash hit “Old Town Road” by Lil Nas X.
The trailer opens on Rambo living the quiet life: he seems to have left the violence of the other movies behind to settle down and enjoy a bit of peace and tranquility in rural Arizona, complete with horseback riding and rocking chairs. This being a Stallone movie, though, that’s just the calm before the storm, and it looks like Last Blood will see the character finally reckon with his demons.
“I’ve lived in a world of death,” he says in the trailer. “I’ve watched people I’ve loved die. Some fast with a bullet. Some, not enough to bury. All these years I’ve kept my secrets. But the time has come to face my past.”
The decision to set the teaser for a gritty, action-heavy movie against “Old Town Road” makes sense, given the Western-inspired vibe of the trailer and the country music influences in the song. It’s also, you could argue, a way of sparking recognition in younger viewers who might not necessarily have strong memories of the Rambo franchise. After all, it started in 1982 with First Blood, and the most recent instalment, Rambo, came out more than a decade ago in 2008.
“Old Town Road” is a smart choice of soundtrack, given its popularity (or notoriety, depending on your point of view). The song first gained fans through various interpretations on the TikTok app, eventually making it into the Top 20 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart, before being disqualified for not being “country” enough. A remix of the song, featuring vocals by Billy Ray Cyrus, eventually reached Number 1 on the main Billboard chart.
