Noel Fitzpatrick, 53, has admitted a horror injury he suffered last year left him recognising what he “took for granted”. The Supervet star admitted he also wants to have children in a highly personal interview on Desert Island Discs.
Noel is well known for his world-class work as a veterinary surgeon on his Channel 4 show.
However, the television vet opened up about his personal life recently in an emotional chat with Lauren Lavern.
The BBC Radio 4 host chatted with Noel about his life and career, including how he suffered a horrific injury last year.
He broke his neck after falling down the stairs into a wall at home.
Recalling the moment, he explained: “Sitting there looking up at the ceiling, you stop taking for granted the things that really matter – your friends and the love in your life.
“And that’s what it did for me.”
The Supervet was then pushed on his comments about “friends and family” and if he’d had to make personal sacrifices for his career.
Noel replied: “From the point of view of my personal life going forward, I’m 53 so if I want to have kids I need to think about that.
“If I want to have some work/life balance I need to think about that, these are big questions.”
Asked if he does want these things, he added: “Yeah, I think so.
“God bless my girlfriend and we’ll see what happens.
“I just hope that it will all work out in the end if I just keep doing the right thing.”
Noel has not previously opened up about his girlfriend and tends to keep his relationships out of the spotlight.
However, he was open on the show about her support of him through his career and struggles.
This isn’t the first time Noel has said he’d like to settle down.
Speaking to The Irish Times, he admitted how he would like to get married.
He said: “I’d like to marry and have kids one day.
“But the wife would have to know she’d always come second to the practice.”
Sharing his experience on Desert Island Discs with his followers, Noel admitted it was a “dream” of his.
He tweeted earlier today: “I am beyond excited to have fulfilled a dream of mine to combine 2 of my greatest passions – medicine and music – with @laurenlaverne on Desert Island Discs @BBCRadio4
“It was a great honour to be invited to contribute. The episode broadcasts today at 11am x #DesertIslandDiscs.”
Desert Island Discs is available to listen to on BBC Sounds now.
