Joe Sugg, younger brother of YouTube star Zoe Sugg, took part in Strictly Come Dancing in 2019. He made it to the show’s final with professional dancer and now-girlfriend Dianne Buswell, but the series eventually saw documentary filmmaker Stacey Dooley lift the Glitterball Trophy.

During this year’s edition, Joe has been hosting the official Strictly podcast alongside producer Kim Winston.

The pair have reflected on each week’s performances, as well as Joe’s experience in the hit BBC shows.

During the last instalment, released after the 2021 final, Joe looked back on the nerves of his own terrifying grand finale as a contestant.

Kim asked Joe whether he was “as calm” as actress Rose Ayling-Ellis and Great British Bake Off star John Whaite were during the final.

Joe explained: “I was calm.

“Calmer than most weeks because you know that you’re not going home.”

He continued: “I think the main thing that pros and celebs get most nervous about is the thought of leaving the show early.

“I think that’s the main thing.

“So, when you get to that final, the nerves aren’t as much there because it does become more of a celebratory show.

“You just know that everyone’s going home in the end – even the crew – because it’s the end of the series.

“So, I think there is that sense of calm you do get on this final.”

However, Joe admitted there was one thing he was nervous about ahead of his last performance.

He said: “I did get nervous when I spotted Mary Berry in the crowd though, standing next to my mum.

“I was like, ‘Oh, wow’. Still to this day, you know, I couldn’t believe it.”

Kim quipped: “I wonder if she’s voted for you.”

Joe added: “Hopefully she was able to whip her phone out and give me a little cheeky vote.”

Last weekend, Rose and Giovanni Pernice won the coveted Glitterball Trophy.

The EastEnders star made history as the show’s first ever deaf contestant.

Rose and Giovanni had an intense competition against John and Johannes Radebe.

The actress was supported during the final by her boyfriend Samuel Arnold, who was spotted in the audience cheering her on.
