Kevin Clifton, 38, has spoken of his girlfriend Stacey Dooley, 33, quitting Twitter, after becoming the object of hurtful messages from trolls. The documentary filmmaker decided it was time to leave the platform, as the negatives began to “outweigh” the positives on the social media site.

Twitter in particular can get quite nasty

However, Stacey does still remain on Instagram, where she has a “good following” and continues to remain actively engaging with fans when she can.

Opening up on the perils of being a celebrity on the micro-blogging site, Kevin said today: “Twitter I suppose in particular can get quite nasty.

“Stacey’s actually come off Twitter, she got to the point where she was saying, ‘The negatives far outweigh the positives’.

“She has a good Instagram following and she’s active on social media. Twitter in particular she says she doesn’t use it that much, in terms of promoting things.

“Whenever you put anything on Twitter there seems to be just abuse. You can’t get away from it,” the former Strictly Come Dancing pro added.

Kevin made the revelation while chatting on his podcast with Mayah Rivaz, who is the founder of Social Media Kindness Day.

He continued: “I’ve been looking at Twitter lately, and it’s almost like a video game for people.

“Where you are like this avatar because it’s difficult to connect to someone as a person, you’re like an avatar of yourself. It is like a performance.”

Kevin is a regular Twitter user and has over 200,000 followers.

He has dated Stacey since 2019, the year after they were paired up for Strictly Come Dancing and won the series.

Last year Kevin quit the show and the pair began living together in a “tiny” London flat.

However, they have recently moved into a larger size home complete with a stunning outdoor area, to enjoy the upcoming warmer nights in.

Stacey shared that lockdown made the couple stronger as they bonded over the redecoration of their new abode.

She told The Mirror: “I call him Kev Titchmarsh. He loves the garden.

“When the lockdown kicked off, we were in this tiny flat and I thought, ‘We need a house’.

“So we bought the house and have a garden – and Kev is never out of it.

“I think if I’d have been single [during the lockdown], I’d have been so lonely. It breaks my heart, the idea that people had to go through this alone.”

However, Stacey, who shot to fame in 2008 after appearing on BBC Three documentary, Blood, Sweat And T-Shirts, admits that living together can sometimes be a challenge.

The couple have had their share of ups and downs, especially when it comes to keeping their household pristine, amid a very pricey marble table addition.

In an online chat with fans on event site Fane, Stacey revealed: “Kev keeps using it  [the marble table] and not putting coasters down. That’s stressful.”
