Simon Cowell issues update on broken back after undergoing emergency surgery

Simon Cowell is recovering in hospital following six hours of emergency surgery after breaking his back.

The 60 year old fell onto his back from a new electric bike at his home in Malibu where he was rushed to hospital.

Britain's Got Talent boss Simon has now been operated on, with a spokesman for the star updating fans on his condition.

"Simon has broken his back in a number of places in a fall from his bike whilst testing a new electric bike in the courtyard of his home in Malibu with his family.

"He was taken to hospital where they operated overnight, he's under observation and is doing fine," the spokesman said.

A source added: "The operation was a success but Simon will be in hospital for some time yet to recover."

Representatives for Simon confirmed news of his injuries on Sunday morning, saying: "Simon has broken his back and will be having surgery this evening.

"Simon had a fall from his bike on Saturday afternoon whilst testing his new electric bike in the courtyard at his house in Malibu with his family."

"He hurt his back and was taken to the hospital. He's doing fine, he's under observation and is in the best possible hands," the rep continued to People.

During lockdown Simon has been spending time with girlfriend Lauren Silverman and their son Eric, six, as well as Lauren's 14 year old son Adam from a previous relationship.

Speaking about his time in lockdown in May, he explained how his life has changed due to the pandemic.

He said: "We definitely have more family time together now. We watch movies in the evening, play together, read books, comics, everything."

Simon also described how he is able to be stricter with his diet and exercise routine, after losing four stone recently, because of the extra time he has.

The dad of one explained: "I'm doing a bit of cooking. I'm exercising. Funny enough, more during this time as well, sticking to the diet.

"The only difficult thing is when Eric orders a pizza… That's the number one thing I miss."

Speaking about how he's been coping in isolation, the music mogul decided to share some tips to his many fans as he said: "Most importantly, occupy your mind. You have to stick to a routine.

"Fortunately, with things like with Zoom, you stay in touch with the world, keep motivated, come up with ideas… I never get this time, normally."
