Penny Lancaster, 49, revealed that she and husband Sir Rod Stewart spent lockdown in the UK and at their Florida home, where she began to experience worrying fears that her son could “drown”. The former model described to the Loose Women panel how watching the news began to make her feel anxious that something terrible was going to happen to her family.

My biggest fear

She explained: “I think initially while we were in Florida there was so much fear. And particularly in America, a lot of confusion because each state has its own rules about the lockdown, and how they should go about advising people.

“There wasn’t one kind of big government… Trump decided to let everyone decide for themselves in each state.

“Which was quite confusing, but just hearing the stories, the horror stories, and seeing people on oxygen, and in hospital.

“I think my biggest fear was, and I had a dream that my little one drowned, the association with not being able to breathe,” she added.

The star then began to experience “hot sweats” which only added to her existing anxiety during the unprecedented situation.

She continued: “You know and drowning. I woke up in a complete panic, and then on top of that, I was getting these extremely severe hot sweats and I thought I’ve got a temperature, that’s it, I’m going to pass it on to all the family.”

“And then I was getting freezing cold, and then hot, and then cold. On top of the covers, under the covers. I was like, this is the menopause, so I was in lockdown, entering menopause.”

Penny recently opened on difficulties with the menopause as she discussed “horrific” sweating and “burning up” in an interview with the Daily Mail.

She said: “I woke up sweating. Horrific. I actually thought, ‘Is this Covid?’ I had all the menopause symptoms — burning up, feeling wiped out, mood swings that are off the scale. I’ve wanted to scream.”

Before marrying Rod, Penny worked as a successful fashion model for brands including Ultimo.

In 2007 she appeared on Strictly Come Dancing until being voted off in week six.

The TV star revealed recently on former dance partner Ian Waite’s Fitsteps show that Strictly had tested her relationship with Rod.

“He still got jealous because I’ve lost my wife, she’s in the arms of another man.

“She’s spending five to six hours a day with another man. But of course, he loved you and sends his best wishes.”

The rock singer told The Mirror last month that two decades of marriage to Penny had helped him become a better person.

They often still enjoy date nights together, and recently have been pictured out in London’s Mayfair sipping cocktails.

The star shared a sweet photo of her and Rod at the bar enjoying a much-needed refreshment, as they celebrated their fresh out of lockdown “hair cuttings”.

She wrote: “Celebrations of hair cuttings. So happy to be out on the town! Cheers and stay safe.”

Actress Martine McCutcheon responded to the photo: “Looks fab. Wish I was with you in a fab frock! Could do with a night out.”(sic)

Rod’s wife recently sat her policing exams and has now signed up to volunteer for the special constable programme.
