'Mulan' Trailer: Watch the First Footage from Disney's Next Live-Action Remake

The titular heroine proves she’s a force to be reckoned with in the first sneak peek for the film.

It’s time to get down to business because the first trailer for the live-action adaptation of Disney’s "Mulan" is here.

Like the 1998 classic, the remake follows a young Chinese woman who disguises herself as a man in order to join the military. Chinese actress Liu Yifei — who wields a sword and kicks some serious ass in the trailer — stars as the titular heroine, originally voiced by Ming-Na Wen in the animated version.

So far, no sign of Mushu the talking dragon or any of the original’s songs, as this appears to be a much more grounded take on the tale.

Here’s the official synopsis from Disney:

When the Emperor of China issues a decree that one man per family must serve in the Imperial Army to defend the country from Northern invaders, Hua Mulan, the eldest daughter of an honored warrior, steps in to take the place of her ailing father. Masquerading as a man, Hua Jun, she is tested every step of the way and must harness her inner-strength and embrace her true potential. It is an epic journey that will transform her into an honored warrior and earn her the respect of a grateful nation … and a proud father.

The film features what Disney hails as a "celebrated international cast" including Donnie Yen as Commander Tung, Jason Scott Lee as Böri Khan, Yoson An as Cheng Honghui, Gong Li as Xianniang and Jet Li as the Emperor.

While the original film was directed by Barry Cook and Tony Bancroft, the new "Mulan" will be directed by Niki Caro ("The Zookeeper’s Wife") and written by Elizabeth Martin, Lauren Hynek, Rick Jaffa, and Amanda Silver. The screenplay is based on Guo Maoqian’s famous poem "The Ballad of Mulan."

"Mulan" hits theaters March 27, 2020
