Miley Cyrus reportedly begged Liam Hemsworth to go to marriage counselling with her in a bid to save their relationship – but he refused.
The couple have split after 10 years together on and off, and less than a year after they got married in a stunning private ceremony.
As news of the break up was announced, Miley was seen kissing Brody Jenner's ex-wife Kaitlynn Carter during a girls' trip to Lake Como.
And now, sources close to the couple say it was Miley who fought to save their marriage.
Insiders told TMZ that they had been struggling with various issues for months, and that Miley pushed for them to go to therapy together in a bid to make their marriage work.
But the source said: "He didn't come close to meeting her half way."
The split was announced over the weekend, when a spokesperson for Miley told People : "Liam and Miley have agreed to separate at this time.
"Ever-evolving, changing as partners and individuals, they have decided this is what’s best while they both focus on themselves and careers.
"They still remain dedicated parents to all of their animals they share while lovingly taking this time apart.
"Please respect their process and privacy."
Following the split and the pictures of her kissing Kaitlynn, Miley, 26, posted on Instagram to tell her fans that "change is inevitable".
Sharing two stunning snaps of herself posing up at the top of a mountain, she said: "Don’t fight evolution, because you will never win. Like the mountain I am standing on top of , which was once under water , connected with Africa , change is inevitable.
"The Dolomites were not created over night, it was over millions of years that this magnificent beauty was formed. My dad always told me “ Nature never hurries but it is always on time”…. it fills my heart with peace and hope KNOWING that is true. I was taught to respect the planet and its process and I am committed to doing the same with my own …."
