Joe Jonas has finally answered the most pressing question about his wedding to Sophie Turner (and no, it’s not “Did Diplo ruin the ceremony?”): Why Vegas?
The surprise nuptials—which took place before a small crowd in Sin City’s Little White Wedding Chapel following the Billboard Music Awards—was, in a way, perfect for the couple. With an Elvis impersonator as the officiant, Ring Pops for wedding bands, and Diplo as wedding DJ, the festivities fit the duo’s goofy and carefree personalities—but the decision was legally practical too.
“We had to do a legal marriage before we did a real big one,” Joe said in a special men’s edition of BAZAAR.com, confirming earlier reports on the ceremony’s legal purpose. He also confirmed that there will, indeed, be a second wedding.
“It was either the courthouse, or our version, and I preferred our version,” the 29-year-old singer added. “Friends, Elvis, and Ring Pops.”
Jonas told James Corden earlier this year that he and Turner were planning on a summer wedding, and according to recent reports, it’s expected to take place in France. But therein lies the problem: According to the U.S. Embassy in France, a religious ceremony in the country “does not constitute a legal marriage.” The person officiating the ceremony will require a marriage certificate to prove that the civil ceremony has already taken place. So that explains why Joe and Sophie had to say “I do” in the U.S. first, even if it was with a classic Vegas wedding.
We wonder if the French nuptials will include Ring Pops too.
