Glenn Close, 74, was the talk of the town as she arrived at the Oscars 2021 red carpet in a blue embellished gown. But fans were more focused on the anticipation surrounding her potential win as the ceremony commences, following her disappointing history at the Academy Awards.
Enough is enough!
This year will mark her eighth nomination at the Oscars, as she is up for Best Supporting Actress for her role as a tough-as-nails grandmother in Hillbilly Elegy, with many eager to see her finally take home the pretigious award.
Close was first nominated for the Academy Award in 1983, for Best Supporting Actress in The World According to Garp.
The following two years she landed her name back on the list for the same accolade, for The Big Chill (1984) and The Natural (1985), but narrowly lost out.
She was nominated once again in 1988 and 1989 and then again in 2012 and 2019 for Best Actress, the latter two which were for Albert Nobbs and The Wife.
But Olivia Colman took the 2019 award for her role in The Favourite.
Now, it seems Close and her fans, have waited long enough for her to bring home one of her very own.
Taking to Twitter after the actress graced the red carpet, they hoped this year would be her year.
One said: “Really need Glenn Close and Dianne Warren to win tonight and I’ll be happy. Enough is enough!”
“Glenn deserves this Oscar, come on!!!!” another cheered with their fingers crossed.
A third predicted: “I say Glenn Close finally gets her Oscar.”
“Let’s not forget about Glenn Close who deserves the world I really do hope she can finally win her first Oscar,” a fourth wondered, referring to her long run as runner-up.
“It’s shocking to see that Glenn Close has yet to win an Academy Award, and this may very well be the time she finally wins. The competition is really tough, but the Academy may show her love this Sunday,” someone else added.
A sixth pleaded: “Pls vote for Glenn Close tonight everyone.”(sic)
“It’s ridiculous that Glenn Close hasn’t taken home an Oscar yet after 8 times?! tonight is her night!” said a seventh.
Another commented: “Rooting for Glenn Close #Oscar2021”
“Well I love Glenn Close now she deserves an Oscar more than and with such class give that lady something to share!” someone else said.
Others however weren’t so sure, with one admitting: “Yes, Glenn Close deserves an Oscar but not THIS one.”
“I don’t think it’s in the stars tonight for poor Glenn Close…..” a second winced.
If the actress fails to win again, she will be tied with the late Peter O’Toole as the Academy’s most “reliable runner-up”.
Ahead of the ceremony, Close shared a few snaps of her pre-red carpet glam to Instagram, showing off her CBD-infused pedicure and a cheeky photo of her enjoying a drink in her robe while waiting to get dressed.
Despite her losses, she said about her history at the Academy Awards: “It was 38 years ago I went on the red carpet for the first time and it’s been an incredible journey and I’m just so happy to be here.”
